Parish picture

Sidlesham is a large parish of 4,179 acres, is bounded on the east by the Bremere Rife and on the south by the Broad Rife, dividing it from Selsey. The church and village lie in the north of the parish at the junction of a number of roads and lanes.

In 1755 Woodruffe Drinkwater of Chichester built a great tide-mill on the site, with three water-wheels, and eight pair of stones. This fine building was put out of action by the reclamation of Pagham Harbour in 1876 and was pulled down for the sake of its bricks in World War 1.

Parish picture

The church, dedicated to St. Mary, stands east of the Chichester-Selsey road. It is built of rubble and stone, and a porch of brick; the roof is tiled. At the end of the 12th century there was begun a church with chancel, crossing, transepts flanked with eastern aisles or chapels; some years later this was continued by an aisled nave; the tower is of doubtful date, but may be as late as the later 16th century, with older dressed stones reused.
