Sidlesham is a village and large parish, in the western division of the county, hundred of Manhood, rape, and county court district of Chichester, union of Westhampnet, and in the rural deanery of Box grove (3rd division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The village is near the south-eastern boundary of the parish, on the road to Chichester, and about 5 miles from that city. The church of St Mary is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of nave and transepts and has a tower containing 2 bells: in the church is a monument to George Taylor, of Almodington, and Rebecca his wife. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £182 10s. , with 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Joseph Heptinstall Marshall M.A of Worcester College Oxford. A charity of £155 7s. 7d. yearly, left by Lady Pickeringe, is applied to the support of 5 poor widows, each receiving a small sum weekly, and the residue for apprenticing. A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in 1878. The principal landowners are the Ecclesisastical Commissioners who are lords of the manor, the Pagham Harbour Reclamation Co. J. Godman Esq. The soil is loam; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,139 acres; rateable value £7,106; the population in 1881 was 946.
