Sidlesham is a village and large parish on the road to Chichester and 5 miles from that city, in the south-western division of the county, hundred of Manhood, rape petty sessional division and county court district of Chichester, union of Westhampnett, and in the rural deanery of Selsey and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The Selsey Tramways Company have stations at Sidlesham and Chalder, and cars are run in connection with London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Company’s trains at Chichester. The church of St Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style and has a tower containing 2 bells; the church was restored in 1890 at a cost of £500 and affords 320 sittings. The register dates from 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, with a few acres of glebe and residence in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1916 by the Rev. Francis Arthur Haines M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. Here is a Weslyan Methodist chapel, built in 1878. A charity of £145 yearly, left by Dame Elizabeth Puckeringe, is applied to the support of 2 poor widows, each receiving a small some weekly, and the residue for apprenticing fatherless children. The Dean and Chapter of Chichester, W. J. Whittle’s trustees and William Stacey, the farmers and William Augustus Aylwin esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,169 acres of land and 9 of water; population 1n 1921 was 801.
