Sidlesham is a village and large parish on the road to Chichester and 5 miles from that city, in the south-western division of the county, hundred of Manhood, rape petty sessional division and county court district of Chichester, union of Westhampnett, and in the rural deanery of Selsey and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The Selsey Tramways Company have tations at Sidlesham and Childer, and cars are run in connection with London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Company’s trains at Chichester. The church of St Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style and has a tower containing 2 bells; the church was restored in 1890 at a cost of £500 and affords 320 sittings. The register dates from 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £115, with 15 acres of glebe and residence in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Thomas Dutton M.A. of St John’s College, Oxford. Here is a Weslyan Methodist chapel, built in 1878. Achrity of £145 yearly, left by Dame Elizabeth Puckeringe, is applied to the support of 5 poor widows, each receiving a small some weekly, and the residue for apprenticing fatherless children. The Ecclesiastical Commisioners, who are lords of the manor, Joseph Godman esq. of Hascombe, Godalming, and the Dean and Chapter of Chichester are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,169 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value ££5,621; population 1n 1901 was 799.
