Parish picture

Part of the ancient Parish of Battle, Netherfield is a village with no obvious centre, it straggles for around a mile along a ridge between Brightling and Battle. The name is derived from the old English word naedre (Nadder), a creeping thing or adder. So Netherfield (Nadderfield) means literally Adder's Field or open space. The Victorian church was a gift to the village from Lady Webster in memory of her husband, Sir Godfrey Webster of Battle Abbey.

Parish picture

The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, this stone head adorns the doorway and there is a rather gruesome painting inside of the patron saint's head on a platter.

Sadly the Congregational Chapel of 1892 is long gone, all that is left are a few bushes and trees from its garden growing next to the road.

Parish picture

The old schoolhouse adjoining the churchyard was also given by Lady Webster, in 1859. The school closed in 1961. The building looked particularly attractive during the snow of January 2010, as too did St John's Church.

Parish picture

There are two public houses, both at the western end of the village - the Netherfield Arms and the White Hart Inn. The village also contains the Shooting Box. This unusual tower is situated on the road to Mountfield and is today a holiday home; it was originally the Shooting Lodge for the Ashburnham estate.
