The parish appears in the Domesday Book, 1086, called Calvintone and Caveltone has four entries although the church is not mentioned. The church was among those taxed by Pope Nicholas IV in 1291.

The church is tiny and is constructed of flints from the local South Downs. The church tower is wooden, and leans slightly due to the October hurricane of 1987.
