Chalvington is a parish about 2 ½ miles north (by road) from Berwick railway station, on the East Coast branch of the London, Brighton & South Coast railway, 8 east by road from Lewes, 7 west from Hailsham, & 54 by road from London, in the southern division of the county, Shiplake hundred, Pevensey rape, Hailsham petty sessional division and Eastbourne & Lewes county court district, Hailsham union, rural deanery of Pevensey (second division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of St Bartholomew is an ancient structure of flint, in the Norman & Early English styles, and has a turret containing 3 bells; the church was restored in 1873, at a cost of £890; there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net income £137, with residence and 90 acres of glebe, in the gift of Miss Mabel Fuller, and held sine 1895 by the Rev. Richard Harford Irvine. Sir James Duke bart. Of Laughton, is the lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, clay & sand. The chief crops are wheat, beans and oats. The area is 749 acres; rateable value £1,065; the population in 1901 was 115.
