Buxted, (East Sussex)

Parish picture

Between Uckfield and Heathfield, Buxted is a village in two unbalanced parts. The ancient church stands in Buxted park and was originally surrounded by the village. In the early 1800's Lord Liverpool, the Prime Minister, purchased Buxted Park, and wished to make the park bigger to enclose the village, and then remove it. His plans succeeded, as he didn't repair any of the houses in the village. Eventually the villagers left, and, by 1836, all the buildings except for the church of St Margaret were demolished; the villagers being forced to move about 1 mile away to the new village.

A new church in the relocated village was needed and St Mary's was built in the late 1800's and opened in 1884. When the railway came a station was built in the new village, an intermediary station on the line between Oxted and Uckfield (once to Lewes).

In 1907 the Wesleyan Methodists built this neat chapel in the village.
