The Priory, though now a parish church, is not a typical country church. Built on the site of a Saxon church, soon after the Conquest, by monks from Lessay in Normandy, the building took on cathedral proportions. Originally the Benedictine monks used part of the building as their priory, leaving the rest of the building available to the villagers to use as their parish church. The twin dedication to St Mary & St Blaise probably reflects its dual purpose.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII the priory section fell into disrepair, its ruins very evident today. The local villagers maintained the upkeep of their parish church section and the arrangement continues to the present day.
The remains of the priory’s church are now part of the existing parish church. To the north of this are remains of the cloister and the c.1300 guest range, which are in the care of English Heritage.
