Notes: Around 1903/4 Robert Stephen Burstow established a tobacconists's in South Road. From 1909 to 1911, directories list him as a hairdresser although he continued selling tobacco as the Capstan advertisement in the glass case shows. This rare interior view was originally published as an advertising postcard for the new 'hairdressing and shaving saloon'. Note the gas lighting and leather strops for sharpening razors. Burstow later became manager of Rice Bros., saddlers, cycle and motor agents, in South Road, the site is now occupied by Sainsbury's.
