Will of John Gallop of Hastings

In the name of God Amen I John Gallop of the town and port of Hastings in the county of Sussex being weak in body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, considering the uncertainty of human life and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say): First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my creator through the only merits of Jesus Christ my saviour and redeemer to have free pardon and remission of all my sins and be made partaker of life everlasting and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executrix hereafter named. And as touching the disposal of all such temporal estate which Almighty God has been pleased to bestow upon me, I give and dispose thereof as followeth:

Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my nephew Edward Gallop the sum of five shillings to be paid by my executrix hereafter named within one month after my decease provided the said Edward Gallop be alive to demand it.

Item – I give and bequeath to my nephew John Gallop the sum of one shilling to be paid by my executrix hereafter named within one month after my decease.

Item – I give and bequeath to my loving wife Elizabeth Gallop all that my now dwelling house with all and every the appurtenances thereunto belonging and now therewith used, occupied and enjoyed, situate, standing and being in the parish of St Clements in Hastings aforesaid, to have and to hold unto my said loving wife Elizabeth and to her heirs for ever;

Item – I give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Elizabeth all that my messuage or tenements adjoining to my said dwelling house and now in the occupation of Zebulon Morphett with the crewhouse gardens and all and every the appurtenances thereunto belonging and now therewith used, occupied and enjoyed to have and to hold unto my said loving wife Elizabeth and to her heirs for ever.

Item – All the rest and residue of my estate, goods, chattels, household stuff, plate, ready [-?-] money and other things whatsoever or wheresoever (my debts, funeral expenses and legacies being first deducted, taken out, satisfied and paid), I give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Elizabeth the same and every part and parcel thereof. Also I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my said loving wife Elizabeth, full and sole executrix of this my last will and testament and revoking all former and other wills by me made. I do publish and declare this present writing consisting of one sheet of paper to be my only last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said John Gallop have hereunto set my hand and seal this eighth day of November in the tenth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty six.

Feb: 4 1737 was sworn Elizabeth Gallop sole executrix named in this will to whom was committed the administration of the goods and the burden of the execution of the same and was also sworn to the truth of the inventory before us …
