Harrison's description (1911):

ST. MARY AND ST. GABRIEL. Restored in 1852 and 1870. Fine cruciform E.E. church, with tapering spire, covered with copper. The chancel (early 13th c.) has lofty arch with dog-tooth mouldingl; good triplet of lancets at E. end; Elizabethan roof (1574); priests' door with shafts; "restored" low-side window. Nave (late 13th c.) has pillars without capitals (cf. Cold Waltham, Slindon and Rustington); W. window and some others good Dec. 15th c. vestry. Font E.E.

Note:fine marble monument by Westmacott to Sir H. Featherstonhaugh (1846); weather-beaten tomb of recumbent knight (outside the church); curious semi-circular tomb in S. chancel wall (1675); tomb with recumbent figures in S. transept; brass to Ford family (1670); old glass. Cardinal Pole was rector of this parish. Reg 1567.
