Will of Thomas Brooker of Worth

In the name of God Amen the twelfth day of April Anno Dni 1649 I Thomas Brooker senior of Worth in the County of Sussex husbandman being sicke in body but of good and perfect memory praised be God doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme following that is to say. First and principally I comend my soule into the hands of Almighty God my maker hopeing assuredly through his mercy and the only merritts of Jesus Christ my saviour and redeemer to be made partaker of like ever lasting and my body to the earth from whence it first came. Inprimis I give and bequeath unto Sara Gardner the daughter of John Gardner deceased the sume of tenn pounds to be paid unto her within one yeare after the decease of Eve Brooker my wife. Item I give and bequeath unto Mary Gardner the daughter of John Gardner deceased the sume of tenn poundes to be paid unto her within one yeare after the decease of the said Eve my wife. Item I give and bequeath unto Sara Brooker the wife of John Brooker one brended cow with a white face to be given unto her within one weeke after my decease. Item I give and bequeath unto the five children of my sonne in law John Brooker each of them one sheepe to be given unto them within one week after my decease. Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne in law John Brooker the sume of five shillings to be paid unto him within one yeare after the decease of my said wife. Item I give and bequeath unto my welbeloved grandchild Thomas Brooker the sonne of John Brooker the sume of tenn poundes to be paid unto him within one yeare after the decease of my said wife Eve. All the rest of my goods chattells and debts whatsoever unbequeathed I give and bequeath unto my welbeloved grandchild James Brooker the sonne of John Brooker whom I doe make sole executor of this my last will and testament. And I doe nominate and ordaine Nicholas Arnold my loveing freind John Brooker my sonne in law and William Streeter all of them of the parish of Worth overseers of this my last will and testament dureing the nonage of my aforesaid executor desireing then to take an inventary of all my goods chattells and debts whatsoever. And allow unto my said wife Eve all the proffitts that may issue and arise from them dureing her naturall life and afterwards to be distributed as aforesaid. And I doe give unto my said overseers five shillings apeece for their paines over and above their ordinary charges herein to be taken. In wittnes whereof I have caused this my testament and last will to be made and have hereunto sett my hand and seale the day and yeare above written. Tho Brooker his marke and seale.

Read sealed signed and published in the presence of Andrew Skenn? his marke, Math Whiston provided that if Eve Brooker my wife live after this my executor come to age then my will and testament is that my said executor shall not inioy the residue of my goods after my debts and legacies be paid untill my said wife Eve decease. And I desire my overseers to allow unto my wife such a competencie of meanes as they shall think fitt and as need requires over and above the proffitts of my estate if that cannot maintaine her. This last clause was written before the sealing and delivery thereof . Math Whiston

The first day of March in the yeare of our Lord God according to the English stile one thousand six hundred fifty one a Commission issued forth to Nicholas Arnold one of the overseers named in this will to administer the goods chattells and debts of the said deceased according to the tenor and effect of his last will & testament dureing the minoritie of James Brooker executor named in the said will hee being sworne well and truly to administer the same.
