This is the last will and testament of me James Arkcoll of Herstmonceux in the county of Sussex, yeoman, that is to say, my will is and I do hereby direct that all such debts as I shall justly owe at the time of my death and my funeral expenses shall in the first place be fully paid and satisfied and I do hereby charge all my estate both real and personal with the payment thereof and subject thereto I give and devise unto my House Keeper Barbara Swaylan, widow, my messuage or Peaement (?) ground and hereditaments lying and being in Herstmonceux aforesaid and now in my own occupation with their and every of their appurtenances to hold the same and every part thereof unto her the said Barbara Swaylan her heirs and assigns forever. I also give and bequeath unto the said Barbara Swayland to and for her own use and at her own disposal absolutely all my monies, goods, chattels and personal estate whatsoever and of what kind or quality soever the same may be after payment of all my said debts and funeral expenses and the expenses of proving this my will. And I constitute and appoint the said Barbara Swaylan sole executrix of this my last will and testament and lastly I do hereby revoke all former and other wills by me at any time or times heretofore made and declare this (?) to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the ninth day of June in the forty ninth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith and in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and nine.

Signed and sealed by the above named James Arkcoll and by him published and declared as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who have hereunder subscribed our names as witnesses thereto in his presence.

15 December 1809 – then was sworn Barbara Swaylan the sole executrix named in this will to whom was committed the (?) of this execution thereof (sworn also that the good, chattels and credit of the said deceased do not amount in value unto one hundred pounds).
