Will of John Ward of West Grinstead

In the name of God Amen I JOHN WARD of WESTGRINSTED in the County of Sussex gent being sicke & weake in body but of a good disposing minde & memory (Thanks be given to Almighty God) doe make & ordaine this my last will & Testament in writing in manner & forme following First & principally I com[m]end & comitt my soule into the mercifull hands of Almighty God my Creator & Redeemer And my body to the earth to bee buryed in decent manner And as touching my worldly goods I give & bequeath the same as followeth That is to say

I give & bequeathe to WILLIAM WARD my brother the sum[m]e of Fiftie pounds of lawfull money of England to be payd unto him w[i]thin six moneths next after my decease

Also I give & bequeath to THOMAS WARD my brother the like sum[m]e of Fiftie pounds of like lawfull money to be payd w[i]thin the time aforesayd

Also I give & bequeath to each of the Children of my said two brothers the sum[m]e of five shillings of like lawfull money to be payd w[i]thin the time aforesaid

Also I give & bequeath to MARY HILL wife of EDWARD HILL of BILSBOROUGH in the said County the like sum[m]e of five shillings of like lawfull money to be payd w[i]thin the time aforesaid

Also I give & bequeath to ANN WEST wife of NICHOLAS WEST of COWFOLD in the said County yeoman the sum[m]e of five shillings of like lawfull money to be paid w[i]thin the time aforesayd

Also I give and bequeath unto JOHN MICHELL of BROOKE in COWFOLD afores[ai]d gent. The like som[m]e of five shillings of like lawfull money to be paid within the tyme aforesaid

Also I give to THOMAS ELLIS JOHN ELLIS & GEORGE ELLIS sonnes of THOMAS ELLIS late of WORTH in the s[ai]d County deceased the som[m]e of five shillings apiece of like lawfull mony to be p[ai]d within the tyme aforesaid

Also I give & bequeath to MARY ELLIS daughter of the s[ai]d THOMAS ELLIS the like som[m]e of five shillings of like lawfull mony to be p[ai]d w[i]thin the tyme aforesaid

Also I give & bequeath unto JANE LANCASTER wife of THOMAS LANCASTER of WESTGRINSTED aforesaid the like som[m]e of five shillings of like lawfull mony to be paid w[i]thin the tyme aforesaid

Also I give unto THOMAS & JANE LANCASTER Two of the Children of the said THOMAS LANCASTER the like som[m]e of five shillings apiece to be paid w[i]thin the tyme aforesaid

Also I give & bequeath to MARY AGATE dau of RALPH AGATE late of WALEHURST in the s[ai]d parrish of COWFOLD deceased, the som[m]e of fiftie shillings of lawfull mony of England to be paid w[i]thin the tyme aforesaid

Also I give and bequeath to GEORGE WARD EDWARD WARD and THOMAS WARD sonnes of GEORGE WARD my Brother deceased the som[m]e of five shillings apiece of like lawfull mony to be paid w[i]thin the tyme aforesaid

Also I give and bequeath to the severall daughters of the s[ai]d GEORGE WARD deceased the som[m]e of five shillings apeece of like lawfull mony to bee paid w[i]thin the tyme aforesaid

Also I give unto the poore of the Parrish of WESTGRINSTED aforesaid the som[m]e of Twenty shillings of like lawfull mony to be paid w[i]thin one month next after my decease

Also I give and bequeath to the poore of the parrish of COWFOLD the som[m]e of Tenn shillings of like lawfull mony to be paid w[i]thin one month next after my decease

Also I give & bequeath unto JOHN WARD my nephew Sonne of the said GEORGE WARD deceased All my messuages buildings lands & hereditaments w[i]th the app[ur]tenancs being Freeholds lyeing in the Several parishes of WESTGRINSTED & COWFOLD aforesaid & ASHURST in the s[ai]d County To have & to hold the same to him the s[ai]d JOHN WARD his heires & assignes for ever

And whereas I the said JOHN WARD have before the making of this my Will Surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the Manor of HIGHURST in the said County by the acceptance of THOMAS BARTLETT & JOHN AWOOD, Two Customary tennants of the said manor All those my copyhold lands lieing in COWFOLD aforesaid w[i]th the appurtenances called COURT FEILDS to such uses as I should give limmit or direct in the same to be in & by my last Will & Testament under my hand and Seale in writeing therefore for a True declarac[i]on of the use thereof I the s[ai]d JOHN WARD doe by this my Will limitt and direct that the said Surrender shalbe & operate and that the s[ai]d Lands shall goe & be to the use of the s[ai]d JOHN WARD my nephew & his heires and assignes for ever according to the Custome of the said mannor and according to the true intent and meaning of the said Surrender And I intreate my loveing Brother THOMAS WARD aforesaid and THOMAS AGATE of IVERIES[?] GATE in WESTGRINSTED aforesaid to be overseers of this my Will & I give to each of them Twenty shillings of like lawfull mony over & above their Charges for their care in seeing this my Will be truely performed All the rest of my goods Cattell and Chattells whatsoever I give and bequeath to the said JOHN WARD my nephew Sonne of the s[ai]d GEORGE WARD deceased whom I doe make full and Sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament And In Wittnes that this is my last Will and Testament I have hereunto set my hand and Seale (making void all former Wills by me made the Eighteenth day of May Anno Regne D[om]ini [...] regs Caroli Sedie &c vicesimo secundo Annoq[ue] s[omi]ni 1670
