The Last Will and Testament of Me JAMES BOTTING of WEST GRINSTEAD in the County of Sussex yeoman made this Twenty Seventh day of June in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Nine First I commend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God my mercifull Creator trusting only through the merits of my Saviour Jesus Christ to enjoy his blessed kingdom my Body I will shall be decently buried at the discretion of my loving Wife And as for my Worldly Estate I dispose thereof as followeth

Whereas upon my Marriage with my now wife I settled and Conveyed All that my messuage or Tenement & lands called EASTLANDS NORTH FERRING & THROKEHAM containing by Estimation Sixteen Acres be the same more or less lying in WEST GRINSTED aforesaid To the use of my Self for my life Remainder To the use of my said Wife for her Life Remainder To the Heirs of my Body upon her to be begotten Remainder to my own Right Heirs forever With a Power in the said Settlement for my said wife in failure of Issue by me to be begotten upon her body to Charge the Lands aforesaid with the payment of Sixty pounds to such Person or Persons as she shall by her Will direct and appoint And whereas I have no Issue by my said Loveing wife therefore I do by this my Will Give and devise the Remainder of my said Messuage or Tenement and Lands called EASTLAND NORTH FERRING and THROKEHAM with the Appurtenances And all my Estate Right Title and Interest therein from and after the death of my said Loving wife unto my Nephew JOHN BOTTING Son of my brother JOHN and the Heirs and Assigns of my said Nephew JOHN forever And I will and direct that my said Nephew shall not Cut or Fell any Timber for Sale on the said Lands till the Expiration of Twenty years next after my Death.

Also I give and bequeath unto my Loving wife the use of Several household Goods following for the term of her Natural life (to witt) Two Beds and all thereto belonging Four pair of sheets a Chest of Draws One Box Three Table Cloaths one Dozen of Napkins six Towels One Looking Glass Six pewter Dishes One Dozen of pewter plates One Iron Porridge Pott and Pothooks one Clock and Case a Brewing Copper Marols [?] Tun and Coolers and Three Barrels and after the Death of my said loving Wife I give all the said Goods equally to be divided between my Two Neices ELIZABETH and JANE BOTTING share and share alike

And I give All the Rest of my Linnen of what sort soever equally to be divided between my Two neices ELIZABETH and JANE share and share alike

All the rest & residue of my Goods Chattles and Personal Estate whatsoever (my Debts Legacies and Funeral Expences being first paid and satisfied) I give and bequeath unto my Two Friends JOHN DENNETT of FALMER WILLIAM WOOLVEN of WEST GRINSTEAD aforesaid and my said Brother JOHN BOTTING Upon Trust and Confidence nevertheless and to the Intent and purpose that they the said JOHN DENNETT WILLIAM WOOLVEN and my said Brother and the Survivors and Survivor of them his Executors or Advisors shall as soon as conveniently may be after my death make Sale of all my Stock and Goods and put and place all such money as shall be raised by Sale thereof and all other my monies Whatsoever out at Interest and shall from time to time pay all such Interest as shall be made thereof unto my said Loving wife during the term of her natural life And from and after her decease my said Trustees and the Survivors or Survivor of them his Executors of Adm[inistrat]ors shall forthwith pay the Sum of Fifty pounds part of such Moneys unto my Neice MARY BOTTING Daughter of my said Brother JOHN if she shall be then living And shall pay all the rest and residue of the said monise and of all my Personal Estate whatsoever & also the said Fifty pounds if my said Neice MARY shall be then dead equally to & amongst my two Neices ELIZABETH and JANE BOTTING share and share alike and if but One of them shall be then living Then shall pay all my said money unto such of them as shall survive her Executors or Advisors And I nominate and appoint the said JOHN DENNETT WILLIAM WOOLVEN and my said brother JOHN BOTTING Joint Executors of this my Last Will and Testament And In Witness that this my Last Will and Testament so contained in these Two sheets of paper I have to each of the said Sheets Subscribed my Name and set my Seal the day and year first above written JAMES BOTTING Signed Sealed and Published by the said JAMES BOTTING the Testator to be his Last Will and Testament In presence of us who have Subscribed our Names as Witnesses hereunto In presence of the said Testator and of each other RICHD ELPHICK JOHN BURFILD JO. BROWN
