In the name of god Amen The Seavententh day of March Anno D[omi]ni 1613in the yeares of the raigne of our soveraigne Lord James by the grace of god King of England Scotland France and Ireland defender of the faith &c scilicet[?] of his raigne of England France and Ireland the Ealeventh and of Scotland the Seaven and Fortith I JOHN WOLVIN of WESTGRINSTED in the County of Sussex yeoman being sick and weake in body but of good and p[er]fect memory laud and praise bee given to Almighty god for it Doe make and ordaine this my p[re]sent Testam[en]t declayring heerein my last will in manner and forme following (that is to say) Firste and principally I commend my soule to Almighty god my maker and Creator and to his sonne Jesus Christ my onely Saviour and Redeemer in and by the merritts of whose p[re]cious bloud death and passion I trust to bee saved and I will my body to bee buryed in the p[ar]ish Churchyard of WESTGRINSTED aforesaid soe neere u[nto] the body of my late wyef MARY deceassed as conveniently may bee

Item I will that all such debts w[hi]ch I doe owe of right or in conscience to any p[er]son or p[er]sons whatsoever shalbee truly paid by my executors heereunder named w[i]thin convenient tyme after my decease

Item I doe give for and toward the mayneteyning of the Cathedrall Church of CHICHESTER Six pence

Item I give and bequeath unto Twenty of the poorest householders of the p[ar]ish of WESTGRINSTED Twenty shillings of lawfull mony of England to bee distributed amongst them w[i]thin one moneth after my decease att the discretion of Mr SAMUELL COOPE

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my two sonnes RICHARD WOLVIN & BENIAMINE WOLVIN All that my Freehold land Com[m]only called or knowne by the name of THISSLEWORTH Situate lying and beeing in the p[ar[ish of WESTGRINSTED aforesaid Together w[i]th all houses barnes stables orchard gardens comodities & app[ur]tenanc[es] whatsoever to the said Freehold land belonging and app[er]teyning And my will and mind is that the Overseers of this my p[re]sent Testam[en]t hereunder named shall w[i]thin one yeere next and ymediatly after my decease make an equall division and sep[ar]ac[i]on of all he said Freehold lands and all other the p[re]mises w[i]th thapp[ur]tenn[a]ncs thereunto belonging aforesaid and every p[ar]cell thereof And upon the same devision and sep[ar]ac[i]on soe equally made and devided as aforesaid then my will and mind is that my said sonne RICHARD shall take and choose First th’one p[ar]te and porc[i]on of the said lands and p[re]mises soe decided as aforesaid and th’other p[ar]te and porc[i]on thereof shall remayne and bee unto my said sonne BENIAMINE To have holde and enioye All my said Freehold lands and all other the p[re]mises thereunto belonging and every p[ar]cell thereof aforesaid and beeing devided as aforesaid unto my said sonnes RICHARD and BENIAMINE and to the heires male of theire bodyes lawfully begotten and to bee begotten from and after the said division and sep[ar]ac[i]on aforesaid from thenceforth for ever But if is shall happen that if either of my said sonnes BENIAMINE and RICHARD to dye or dep[ar]te this mortall world w[i]thout heires male of theire bodyes lawfully begotten and to bee begotten as aforesaid Then my will and minde is that the p[ar]te and p[or]c[i]on of him soe deceaseing shall forthw[i]th descend and come to him of them soe surviving and unto the heires male of his body lawfully begotten and to bee begotten as aforesaid And if it shall please god that both of my said sonnes RICHARD and BENIAMINE to dye or dep[ar]te this mortall world w[i]thout heires male of theire bodyes lawfully begotten or to bee begotten as aforesaid Then my will and mind is that All my said Freehold land and all other the p[re]mises thereunto belonging and every p[ar]cell thereof aforesaid shall forthw[i]th descend and come unto my eldest sonne JOHN WOLVIN ad to the heires male of his body lawfully begotten and to bee begotten And for default of such issue then the same to descend and come to my sonne RAPHE WOLVYN and to the heires male of his body lawfully begotten and to bee begotten And for default of such issue then the same to descend and come to the heires female of the bodyes of my said sonnes JOHN RICHARD BENIAMINE & RAPH to bee equally devided among such of them that shalbee then lyveing p[ar]te and p[ar]te alike And for default of such issue then the said land and p[re]mises aforesaid to descend and come to the right heires of mee the said JOHN WOLVIN forever Provided allwaies and my will and meaneing is that my said sonne JOHN WOLVYN shall have a certaine annuity or yearly rent charge of Six pounds Thirteene shillings Foure pence of lawfully mony of England to bee paid unto him and to the heires male of his body lawfully begotten and to bee begotten out of the said lands and p[re]mises forever I therefore give and bequeath unto my said sonne JOHN WOLVIN and to the heires male of his body lawfully begotten or to bee begotten as aforesaid forever the said annuity or yearly rent charge of Six pounds Thirteene shillings Foure pence of lawfully mony of England to bee paid unto him thair[?] out of the said lands and p[re]mises aforesaid Att two feasts or termes of the yeere (that is to say) Att the feast of Sts Michaell Tharchangell and Thannunc[i]on of the blessed virgen Mary or w[i]thin Eight and Twenty dayes next ensueing either of the said feast dayes by even porc[i]ons The First paym[en]t thereof to bee made and begynne Att w[hi]ch of the said feasts w[hi]ch shall then and next happen A whole yeere after my decease And my will and minde is that my said sonnes RICHARD WOLVIN and BENIAMINE WOLVIN and the heires male of their bodyes lawfully begotten and to bee begotten to whome the same land and p[re]mises shall descend and come shall pay the said annuity or yearly rent Charge aforesaid in manner and forme as aforesaid (that is to say) the said RICHARD and his heires male aforesaid shall beare and paie th’one moiety or halfe p[ar]te of the said annuity or yeerely rent charge aforesaid and the said BENIAMINE and his heires male aforesaid shall beare and paie th’other half p[ar]te or moiety of the said annuity or yearly rent Charge aforesaid Any my will and mind is that if it shall happen the said annuity or yeerely rent charge to bee behind unpaid in p[ar]te or in all by the said space of Eight and Twenty dayes […?] over or after either of the said feast dayes in w[hi]ch it ought to bee paid as aforesaid (and if lawfully demaunded) Att the now dwelling house of the said RICHARD WOLVIN beeing p[ar]cell of the p[re]mises aforesaid That then and from thenceforth it shall and may bee lawfull to and for my said sonne JOHN WOLVIN and the heires males of his body aforesaid to enter come take possesse reecome[?] and enioye onely the p[ar]te and p[or]c[i]on of the land aforesaid of either of my said sonnes RICHARD and BENIAMIN and the heires males of theire body w[hi]ch shall make default of paym[en]t of the said annuity contrary to the true meaning of this my p[re]sent testam[en]t And such of my said sonnes RICHARD and BENIAMINE and the heires males of theire bodyes aforesaid making default of paym[en]t aforesaid from thence utterly to expell …[?] and put out Any thing herein conteyned to the contrary thereof in any wise not Item I doe give and bequeath unto my said sonne RAPHE WOLVIN All and singular my lands houses and buildings commonly called or knowne by the name of ROCKLAND situate lying and being in the p[ar]ish of WASHINGTON in the County of Sussex together w[i]th all the comodities and app[ur]tenances aforesaid and every p[ar]cell thereof unto my said sonne RAPHE WOLVYN and to the heires male of his body lawfully begotten and to bee begotten Forever And for default of such issue then the same to descend and come to my said sonnes JOHN RICHARD & BENIAMIN and to the heires male of theire bodyes lawfully begotten and to bee begotten And for default of such issue then the same to descend and come to the heires female of my said sonnes JOHN RICHARD BENIAMIN and RAPHE of theire bodyes lawfully begotten or to bee begotten forever. And for default of such issue then the same to descend and come to the right heires of me the said JOHN WOLVEN for ever

Item I give and bequeath unto my said sonne RAPHE WOLVIN Twenty pounds of lawfull mony of England to bee paid unto him when he shall have accomplished his full age of one and Twenty yeeres

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my daughter ANNE PARKER wyef of WILL[IA]M PARKER Forty shillings of lawfull mony of England to bee paid unto her w[i]thin one yeere after my decease

Item I give and bequeath unto PETER HOGSFLESH WILL[IAM] HOGSFLESH & ELIZABETH HOGSFLESH Eight pounds of lawfull mony of England w[hi]ch theire father in lawe the said WILL[IA]M PARKER oweth mee W[hi]ch I will my executors of this my p[re]sent testam[en]t to take into their hands and put out for the best advantage of the said children untill they shall have accomplished theire severall ages of One and Twenty yeeres or dayes of marriage w[hi]ch of them shall first and next happen after the date hereof and then to pay the same w[i]th the p[ro]fitt thereof to the said children or such of them as shalbee then living p[ar]te and p[ar]te alike

Item I give and bequeath unto JOHN HOGSFLESH brother of the Children aforesaid Five pounds of lawfull mony of England to bee likewise ymployed by the executors aforesaid for the best p[ro]ffit of the said JOHN until hee accomplish his full age of One and Twenty yeeres if hee shall soe long live; But if he happen to die his p[ar]te and p[or]c[i]on w[i]th the p[ro]fitt to desend and come to his brothers and sister aforesaid and the longer liver of them to be equally devided amongest them att the tyme of paym[en]t aforesaid

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my daughter MARY wyef of my sonne in lawe GILES SHERWOOD Ten pounds of lawfull mony of England to bee paid unto him w[i]thin one yeere after my decease

Item I doe give and bequeath unto JOHN SHERWOOD & ROB[ER]TE SHERWOOD sonnes of the said GILES each of them Five pounds of lawfull mony of England to be likewise ymployed by my said executors for the best p[ro]ffitt of the said Children until they shall have accomplished theire severall ages of One and Twenty yeeres and then to pay All the same w[i]th the p[r]fitt thereof to them or either of them w[hi]ch shalbee then living soe that either shalbee others heire And if both of them die then the same porc[i]ons to desend and come w[i]th the p[ro]fitt thereof to the residue of the said Children of the said GILES w[hi]ch shalbee then living to be devided amongst them p[ar]te and p[ar]te alike And for want of such children then the same porc[i]ons to come to my said daughter MARY and her said husband GILES SHERWOOD

Item I give and bequeath unto BENIAMIN WOLVIN and ELIZABETH WOLVIN Children of my sonne JOHN WOLVIN each of them Five pounds of lawfull mony of England a peece to bee likewise imployed by my said Executors for the best p[ro]fitt of the said Children until they shall have accomplished theire severall ages of One and Twenty yeeres or dayes of mariage w[hi]ch of them shall first and next happen after the date hereof and then to pay all the same w[i]th the p[r]fitt thereof to them or either of them w[hi]ch shalbee then liveing to be likewise ymployed And if both of them die then the same to descend and come w[i]th the p[re]fitt thereof to the residue of the children of my said sonne JOHN WOLVIN w[hi]ch shalbee then liveing to bee devided amongest them p[ar]te and p[ar]te alike

Item I give and bequeath to AGNES WOLVIN daughter of my said sonne RICHARD WOLVIN Five pounds of lawfull mony of England to be likewise ymployed by my said Executors for her best p[ro]fitt until shee have accomplished her age of One and Twenty yeeres or day of mariage w[hi]ch shall first and next happen after the date hereof and then to bee paid unto her if shee be then liveing But if she bee then dead then the same to descend and come w[i]th the p[ro]fitt thereof to the residue of the Children of my said sonne RICHARD WOLVIN w[hi]ch shalbee then living to bee devided among them p[ar]te and p[ar]te alike

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my godsonne JOHN WATERMAN Five shillings of lawfull mony of England to bee paid unto him w[i]thin one moneth after my decease

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my sonne BENIAMINE WOLVIN Twenty pounds of lawfull mony of England to bee paid unto him w[i]thin one yeere after my decease

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my daughter ELIZABETH WOLVIN Fifty pounds of lawfull mony of England to be paid unto her w[i]thin one yeere after my decease

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my said sonne BENIAMIN WOLVIN RAPHE WOLVIN and my said daughter ELIZABETH WOLVIN All my goods mony and houshold stuffe whatsoever beeing w[i]thin my now dwelling house situate and beeing in WESTGRINSTED aforesaid to bee equally devided amongest them by my overseers hereunder mencioned or two of them att the least

The rest and residue of all and singular my goods chattels cattells and debts whatsoever oweing to mee after my debts paid legacies in this my p[re]sent Testam[en]t p[er]formed and funeral expences discharged I wholly give and bequeath unto my said sonnes JOHN WOLVIN RICHARD WOLVIN and BENIAMINE WOLVIN whome I make and ordayne the full and sole executors of this my p[re]sent testament And I make and ordayne my right trusty and welbeloved frends my right Wor[ship]full good M[aste]r SIR THOMAS CARRELL Knight RICHARD BROWNE and RICHARD GREVETT yeoman Overseers of this my last will and Testam[en]t Willing and requiring them as much as in them lieth to see the p[er]formance of all my will and meaneing of this my p[re]sent Testam[en]t because my special trust and confidence in them And I give them for a token Ten shillings of lawfull mony of England a peece And I will and require my executors of this my p[re]sent testam[en]t to b[ea]re [?] the charges of my said Overseers whensoever they shall meete and confer for or about any matter or course touching this my p[re]sent Testam[en]t And I doe hereby revoke and disanull all other my former will or wills whatsoever Ratifying acknowledging allowing and confirming this my p[re]sent testam[en]t to bee my last will and Testam[en]t In wyttnes whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale geven the daye and yeere above first above written

John Wolvin (the Testator) married Mary Homfie, in West Grisntead, on 6 October 1578. Mary was buried in West Grinstead on 2 June 1612. John was buried in West Grinstead on 20 January 1578/9.

John Wolvin – son of the Testator

John was baptised in West Grinstead on 23 January 1578/9. He was buried in Fittleworth on 1 October 1652.

Richard Wolvin – son of the Testator

Richard was baptised in West Grinstead on 2 October 1584. He was buried in West Grinstead on 29 February 1631/2

Benjamin Wolvin – son of the Testator

He was baptised in West Grinstead on 13 January 1586/7. He married Margery Pollard in West Grinstead on 23 June 1616. He was buried in West Grinstead on 15 November 1619.

Ralph Wolvin – son of the Testator

Ralph was baptised in West Grinstead on 6 August 1599. He married Mary Whittington in West Grinstead on 16 January 1619/20. He was buried in West Grinstead on 21 May 1667.

Ann Parker – Daughter of the Testator

Ann was baptised in West Grinstead on 17 November 1581. She married William Hogsflesh in 1603 (no marriage record has been traced to date, but a licence for the marriage was issued on 2 June 1603. William was said to be from Shipley and Ann from West Grinstead. William Hogsflesh was buried in West Grinstead on 11 June 1611. Ann then remarried to William Parker in West Grinstead on 30 November 1612.

Mary Sherwood – Daughter of the Testator

Mary was baptised in West Grinstead on 24 March 1589/90. She married Giles Sherwood in West Grinstead on 8 June 1607. She was buried in West Grinstead on 4 December 1618, shortly after the birth of her son, Giles, who was baptised in West Grinstead on 12 November 1618.

Elizabeth Wolvin – Daughter of the Testator

She was baptised in West Grinstead on 24 March 1594/5. On 3 December 1618 she married John Slater in West Grinstead. He died in 1626, and Elizabeth remarried to Nicholas Godsmarke in West Grinstead on 31 January 1627/8. Nicholas died n 1635, and on 20 october 1636, in West Grisntead Elizabeth remarried to Thomas Chapman. She was probably the Elizabeth Chapman widow buried in West Grinstead on 25 August 1656.
