War Office, 28th March, 1918, His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to award the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the undermentioned for gallantry and distinguished service in the Field: 150 Pte. H. Britt, R. Suss. R. (nr. Battle). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Though he had been buried by a shell he refused to withdraw. He acted first as a runner, and then re-joined his Lewis gun section, inflicting casualties on the enemy. When the whole of his section was knocked out by shell fire, he continued to serve the gun single-handed, and eventually brought it out of the trenches.
