Will of John Attree of Barcombe

In the name of God Amen the tenth daye of November a thowsand six hundred and nyne I John Attree of of [sic] Barcombe in the Countie of Sussex being lame in body but of perfect and sound memory praysed be God therefore doe ordayne and make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following. First I bequeath my sowle unto God Allmighty my maker Jesus Christe my redeemer and the Holy Ghost my sanctifier and my body unto the earth from whence it came. And as touching the disposicon of my worldly goodes first I give unto the poore people of Barcombe tenne shillinges to be distributed by the overseers for the poore for that tyme being. Item I will and bequeathe unto Richard Attree my eldest sonne twenty poundes to be payd unto him within one yeare after my decease. Item I give unto my sayd sonne Richard my biggest brasse pott one pewter platter and one pewter dish and the chest standing at my beds feete with one payre of sheetes. Item I will unto my sayd sonne Richard fiftie poundes conditionally that he shall make to William Attree my yongest sonne such and so good estate as he hath or can make of the meadow called the Bosse Meade to be and remayne to the said William and his heires for ever. Item I will and bequeath unto Thomas Attree my second sonne one ioyned bedstedle standing in the chamber where he did use to lodge with the fetherbed the fether bolster and two payre of sheetes one blankett and one coverlet to that bed belonging. Item I give unto the sayd Thomas one ioyned chest whereof I ever kept the key and one other litle chest standing next unto him. Item I will unto Henry Hesman my sonne in law his six children twentie pound to be equally devided betweene them to be payd unto their father within one yeare after my decease whom I would have to put it out to the best profitt for them untill they shall accomplish theire ages of one and twenty yeares and then severally and proportionally to pay it unto them as they shall accomplish their age of one and twentie yeares. And yf any of them shall dye before such tyme as they shall accomplish such age my will and meaning is that the survivors of them shall equally devide the same according to the tyme before lymited. Item I will unto Nicholas Attree of Ditchinng taylor twentie shillinges. Item I will unto Richard Vine my servannt twenty shillings and an ewe and a lambe and to every of his brothers and sisters tenne shillings to be payd unto my overseers within one yeare after my decease to the use of the sayd children to be payd unto them at their ages of fifteene yeares. Item I will unto Ann Attree my grandchilde and Godchilde five poundes to be payd unto her at her age of one and twentie yeares or day of mariage which first shall happen. Item my will and meaning is that my executor hereunder named shall keep Elizabeth Esterfeild so long as she shall live with sufficient and competent meate drinke and apparrell. And yf he shall refuse so to doe he shall pay unto her tenn poundes and two paier of sheetes the which I am bound to doe as by the bonde more playnely appeareth. Item I give unto every one of my Godchildren in this parish twelve pence. Item I will unto Edward Esterfeild my Godsonne three shillinges fower pence. Item I give unto Anne Attree my Goddaughter daughter of Richard Attree of Kymer tenn shillinges. Item I give unto Jane Hesman the gold ring which was her mothers and tenn shillinges in money. Item I will unto Dorothie Vine my daughter in law one payre of sheetes. Item I will more to my sonne Thomas Attree my greatest kettle save one two pewter platters and two pewter dishes. All the rest of my goodes and chattells not given nor bequeathed my debts and legacies discharged and buriall performed I give unto William Attree my yongest sonne whom I make my whole and sole executor to this my last will and Testament. Item I doe nominate and intreate William Newton and Henry Hesman of Barcombe to be overseers to this my last will and Testament. And doe give unto them tenne shillings a peece. John Attree his marke
