Parish picture

Broadwater was once the core of Worthing; in fact a book of 1835 speaks of Worthing as a hamlet of Broadwater parish.Worthing began to expand when sea-bathing became popular in the 19th century. In 1861, the population of Broadwater (including Worthing) was 5,970. In 1724 there had been only about 300 inhabitants. This number had grown to 1,018 by 1801.

The chapels of Ease built at Worthing eventually became separate parishes as the population of the district grew.
