Stoughton, (West Sussex)

Parish picture

Stoughton is an extensive parish extending to the Hampshire border, the church of St Mary, is believed to be a complete 11th century church, built sometime between the Danish wars in 1016 and the Norman Conquest in 1066. Only minor changes have been made in the following 1000 years, these being modernisation of the windows and doors in the 12th & 13th centuries, the belfry over the south transept was added at the end of the 14th century. The churchyard was levelled in 1954 and the stone used as a crazy paving area around the front porch.

Memorials in the aisle include the Bayly family from the early 16th century, and the Stares, who owned land in the manor of Walderton and inherited Bayly’s Farm. The Stares family lost their lands when in 1820 by a foreclosure on the mortgage.
