The name is likely to refer to a gate on the large and ancient St Leonard's Forest which lay to the south of the village. The area is associated with the Wealden iron industry, Col possibly referring to charcoal burners. Many hammer ponds are still visible within the parish. Colgate includes the Hamlet of Faygate.
