Instructions for searching the Sussex OPC index of Sussex people mentioned in various Gazettes

Newspaper indicating London Gazette

The London Gazette is an official journal of the British Government. It has been published since 1665 (initially as the Oxford Gazette) and many statutory notices are required to be published on its pages. Michael Metcalfe has started an ambitious project to produce an index of Sussex people mentioned in not only the London Gazette but also the Belfast and Edinburgh Gazettes, fully indexed by name and the parishes to which they are associated - transcribing a high level of detail regarding each entry. This index will give a wealth of additional information to people researching particular Sussex names or parishes.

Use the controls above to select the Gazette data you wish to see. Parishes will appear in the drop down choices only when data is available.

In the (optional) last name field, you may use a '*' for a wildcard in the name to be searched for, e.g. 'Sm*' will return individuals with surnames starting with Sm, e.g. Smith, Small, Smart etc.
