Salehurst, (East Sussex)

Parish picture

Salehurst is situated 13 Miles North of Hastings and 5 Miles south of the Kent border.

Salehurst is an old Saxon settlement which is described in the Domesday book(1086 AD) as having been destroyed by the Normans just before the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is believed that the illustration on the Bayeux Tapestry of Saxon homes being destroyed was based on events around Salehurst.

The name Salehurst derives from the Anglo Saxon Sealh meaning willow, and hurst a thick wood.

Parish picture

Until the dissolution of the monasteries the Parish contained Robertsbridge Abbey. Some remains still exist, however they are only open to the public occasionally with only the refectory wall surviving. It is thought that an undercroft of the present day farmhouse is probably a part of the original Abbey.

St Mary the Virgin, Salehurst, is reputed to be the largest rural parish church in Sussex. This view of the nave gives some idea of the cavernous space.
