Notes:

The Union Congregational Church was built in an Early English style in 1853-54 to the designs of James and Brown. A tower in the south-west corner was planned but never built. In 1867 the church was enlarged and remodelled by Mr Paulton of Reading. In 1898 the congregation merged with that of the Union Street Church to form the Union Congregational Church. In 1973 it became the Central Free Church, but closed in 1983 and was demolished in 1984, having been sold to fund the Brighthelm Centre on Church Street.
