Woodingdean, (East Sussex)

Parish picture

Woodingdean is now a suburb of Brighton and Hove. The ecclesiastical parish was created from part of the ancient parish of Rottingdean in 1953, the parish church is dedicated to the Holy Cross.

The village grew up after World War I, when plots of land previously grazed by sheep were sold off as small holdings, often to returning soldiers.

The name is taken from a farm which used to exist at the south of the village and was once owned by the comedian Max Miller.

The village has one other claim to fame, the deepest hand dug well in the world.
