In the name of God Amen I JAMES BOTTING of WESTGRINSTED in the County of Sussex Blacksmith being infirme in body but of good soundand disposing mind memory & understanding, praised be Almighty God therefore doe make and ordaine this my last Will & Testament in manner and forme following hereby revokeing and making void all former Wills whatsoever by me at any time heretofore made First and principally I com[m]end my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator hopeing and assuredly believing in & through the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour to obtain free remission and forgiveness of all my sins and ever lasting life and my body I desire may be buried in Christian buriall in the Churchyard of the parish of WESTGRINSTED afores[ai]d and as to the worldly Estate wherewith God of his infinite mercy hath … me I give devise & bequeath the same as followeth

First I give & bequeath unto my loving wife MARY the sum[me] of Ten pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain and my best Feather bed with the bolster pillows Bedste[de]ll Blanketts Coverletts and all things thereunto belonging & Four paire of my best [sheetes?] to be p[ai]d …[illeg] by my Executor hereafter named within Three months after my decease

Item I give and bequeath unto my loving Daughter MARY BOTTING the sum[me] of Forty pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid unto her by my Executor hereafter named within Twelve months after my decease

And whereas I have formerly Surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the Manor of TILLINGTON & KINGS BARNES All that my moity of certaine copyhold lands called HAINES being a messuage Barn Hovel and certaine closes adjoining to lands of WILLIAM HODLING & one other croft lying by itselfe called the MILL …[illeg] containing in the whole by estimac[i]on Fourteen acres of Land be the same more or less which I hold of the said Manner and lately purchased of JOHN [illeg] to the use & behoof of such person or persons as I by my last Will & Testament should direct or appoint

Now I doe hereby give & bequeath unto my son JOHN BOTTING the sum[me] of Twenty pounds and to my loving Daughter ELIZABETH BOTTING the sum[me] of Forty pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain to be […?] & paid to them respectively out of my said Copyhold Lands & Tenements within Twelve months next after my decease and after the said sum[me]s of Twenty pounds and Forty pounds shall be paid to my said Son JOHN and Daughter ELIZABETH & the sum of Fifty pounds which I owe to JOHN BARTLETT upon a mortgage of my said Copyhold Messuage & p[re]mises shall bee fully paid & discharged I give & devise the said Copyhold Messuage Lands & premises & my Smyths Shopp unto my Son JAMES BOTTING & to his heires & assignes forever But in case my said Son JAMES BOTTING shall refuse to pay the said sum[me] of Twenty pounds to my said Son JOHN BOTTING & Forty pounds to my said Daughter ELIZABETH BOTTING within the time before lymitted[?] & appointed for payment thereof Then and in such case I doe give & devise the said Copyhold Messuage Lands and p[re]mises unto my said Son JOHN & Daughter ELIZABETH & their heires Jointly between them

Item I will & Desire that all the Debts which I shall owe at the time of my decease shall be truly and faithfully paid by my Executor hereafter named as soon as conveniently may be after my decease

Item all the rest and residue of my goods chattells ready money Debts and personall Estate whatsoever after my debts legacies & funerall expences shall be paid & discharged I give & bequeath unto my said son JAMES BOTTING whom I doe make ordaine & appoint sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament & I doe desire him to performe the same in every aspect In Testimony whereof I the said JAMES BOTTING have to this my last Will & Testament contained in Two Sheets of paper sett my hand & Seal to each Sheet of paper this Nineteenth day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Nine [1709/10] JAMES BOTTING – Signed Sealed published & declared by the said JAMES BOTTING the Testator as his last Will & Testament in the p[re]sence of us who likewise subscribed our names as Witnesses in the p[re]sence of the said Testator RICHARD PENFOLD JOHN TROWER the mark of SAMUEL SMITH
