Will of John Marten of Lindfield

In the name of God Amen. The fourteenth daie of Maye One thousand sixe hundred twenty eight I John Marten of Skirms (?) hill in the p[ar]ish of Lyndfeyld in the Countie of Sussex yeoman being sicke in body but of good and p[er]fect memory, thancks bee given to the allmightie god for the same doe make and ordaine this to bee my last will and Testament in manner and forme following that is to saie ffirst I comitt my Soule unto the allmightie god my maker trusting in his ~ sonne Jessus Christ my Savyour and Redeemer thorow (through?) his death and passion to have free p[ar]don and remission for all my sinns And my body to bee buried in Christianlike manner And as touching my worldly goods which god hath blessed mee w[I]thall I give and dispose as followeth

Item I give and bequeath unto Mary my loveing wife the best bed and bedstedle redy furnished and alsoe one other bed and bedsted w[hi]ch was her ffathers in like manner All the rest of my goods Cattells and Chattells my debtes legacies being payed I give and bequeath unto my Brother William Marten whom I do make Executor in trust of this my last will & Testament to bee sould to the uttermost value w[I]thin one whole yeare next after my decease and to bee putt out to the best proffit that he cann or maie for and towards the maintenance of my wife and children And alsoe to have all these porcons of money equally to be devided betweene Mary my wife, and my two sons Walter and John in manner and forme following That is to saie to Mary my wife if she shall happen to bee married That thenthe porcon unto her formerly given to her paid by myne Executor w[i]thin sixe months next after her daie of marriage and my sonnes prcons to bee paid unto them when they shall accomplish the age of one and Twentey yeres

That then the porcon soe given unto him to remayne to the other brother the survivor then living Provided alwaies my minde and will is that if my wife bee now with Child That then that Child soe borne of her to have out of the foresaid goods Cattells and Chattells fortey pounds to paid when it shall accomplish the age of one and Twentey yeares

Item I give unto my forenamed executor five pounds over and above his Charges w[hi]ch he shalbe at aboute this my last will and Testament And I doe intreate my very good frends John godley of Bynthame(?) in the paris of Chayley, and Henry Swayne of Litlehorsted to bee overseers of this my will And I doe give unto them tenne shillings apeese towards theire paines In witness hereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the daie & yeare first above written
