Will of Rev. John Bishop of Sedlescombe

This is the last Will and Testament of me The Reverend John Bishop of Seddlescombe in the County of Sussex Clerk made this third day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eight three First I give and bequeath to the poor of the parish of Seddlescombe the sum of five pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid by my Executrix and Executor hereafter named in three months after my decease and to be distributed by them to and amongst such poor people as shall not receive relief from the said parish Also I give and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife Mary Bishop all the plate household furniture implements of household goods chattels and effects which have usually belonged unto and are now in and upon the parsonage house and premises of and belonging to the said parish Church of Seddlescombe aforesaid Also I give and bequeath unto my sons Henry Bishop Nathaniel Bishop and William Bishop the sum of five hundred pounds apiece of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid them by my Executrix and Executor hereinafter named as they shall severally attain their respective ages of twenty four years Also I give and bequeath and bequeath unto my daughters Ann Bishop and Francis Bishop the sum of five hundred pounds apiece of like lawful money to be paid them by my Executrix and Executor hereinafter named when they shall have attained their respective ages of twenty four years Also my mind and will is and I do hereby direct my said Executrix and Executor as soon as conveniently may be after my decease to invest in the public funds or otherwise place out at interest on good land security the said several legacies herein given unto my said children and the interest and proceed thereon from time to time to pay and apply respectively towards the bringing up and educating of my said children and in case any of my said children should happen to die before he she or they shall be entitled to their said legacies then and in such case I order and direct that the legacy and legacies of him her or them so dying as aforesaid shall go and be applied to and amongst the survivor and survivors of them equally to be divided between them share and share alike Also I give and bequeath all those my several messuages farms lands tenements and hereditaments situate lying and being in the several parishes of Seddlescombe Ewhurst Battell and Whatlington in the County of Sussex of which I came into possession upon the death of my late brother William Bishop Esquire unto my son James Bishop to have and to hold all and singular the said messuages farms lands tenements hereditaments and premises with their and every of their appurtenances unto my said son James Bishop his heirs and assigns absolutely and for ever and Also I give and bequeath unto my said son James Bishop all the store hay corn hoppoles husbandry tackling plate household furniture and implements of household situate lying and being in and upon the mansion house land and premises thereto belonging called Great Sanders situate in Seddlescombe aforesaid and now in my own occupation Nevertheless my mind and will is and I do hereby declare that my said wife shall have the living in the said mansion house and have the use and benefit of all the store husbandry tackling and also shall use and occupy all the land belonging to the said mansion house which is now in my own occupation and also all the furniture until my said son James Bishop shall have attained his age of twenty six years without paying any thing for the same and I do hereby recommend and earnestly request my said son James Bishop not to fell any timber or underwoods on any part of the said estate till he shall have attained his said age of twenty six years except timber for repairs of any of my said estate or firewood for the said mansion house Also all the rest and residue of my money securities for money goods chattels and effects of what nature or kind soever and whatsoever after payment of my just debts legacys funeral expenses and charges of proving and executing of this my last will and testament I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my said wife Mary Bishop and I do make ordain constitute and appoint my said wife Mary Bishop and my said son James Bishop joint Executrix and Executor of this my last will and testament and my mind and will is and I do hereby declare that my said executrix and executor or either of them their or either of their Executors or Administrators shall not be chargeable with or accountable for any more of my said legacies and interest thereof than they shall actually receive nor with or for any loss which shall happen of the said monies so as such loss happen without their wilful neglect nor the one of them for the other of them or for the acts deeds receipts defaults or disbursements the one or the other and that it shall and may be lawful for them my said Executrix and Executor and either of them and their and either of their Executors and administrators in the first place out of the premises respectively to deduct and reimburse him her or themselves all such costs charges and expenses which he she or they shall sustain expend or be put into by reason of the performance of this my Will and Lastly I do hereby revoke all former and other Will and Wills by me at any time heretofore made and declare this only to be my last In witness whereof I the said John Bishop the testator have to this my last Will and Testament contained in two sheets of paper to the first sheet thereof set my hand and to this last sheet my hand and seal the day and year first above written Jn Bishop Esq signed sealed published and declared by the said John Bishop the testator as and for this last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have subscribed our names as witnesses hereunto at the request and in the presence of the said testator the words without paying any thing for the same doing first This Will was proved at London the twenty eighth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty four before the Right Worshipful Peter Calvert Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of Mary Bishop widow the relict and James Bishop the son of the deceased the executors named in the said Will to whom administration of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased was granted they having been first sworn by commission duly to administer
