Will of John Sharpe of Northiam

In the Name of God Amen I John Sharpe of Northiam in the County of Sussex Gent being sick in body but of whole and perfect memory do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following revoking and disannulling all former Wills by me made As to my estate reall or temporal wherewith God has blessed me I devise as follows Imprimis I will and devise to John Sharpe my oldest son all that my messuage and farm with the appurtenances called Quickburn lying in Northiam in the County of Sussex to him and his heirs forever under the conditions and limitations hereunder specified that is to say upon condition that he shall and do within six months after he shall attain the age of twenty one years by fine or other good conveyance and assurance in the law convey and assure to Mary Sharpe his sister all those lands tenements and hereditaments lying in Benenden and Ewhurst which were her mothers to have and to hold to the said Mary and her heirs forever and that until such conveyance can be made and perfected he shall allow and pay her the said Mary for her present maintenance the sum of eighteen pounds yearly and every year at Ladyday and Michaelmas: the first payment to be made at either of the said feasts which shall first happen after my decease Item I give to Thomas Sharpe my younger son all those my lands and hereditaments lying in Sandhurst and Newenden or either of them and I also will that tenement and farm lying in Rolvenden lately by me purchased of Mr Floyd to have and to hold the said lands and tenements the one moiety to him and his heirs from and after the decease of Jane my wife upon condition nevertheless that he shall and do surrender according to the custom of the manor of Robertsbridge all that copyhold tenement with the appurtenances wherein I now do dwell to the use of Jane my wife for and during the term of her natural life and after her decease to the use of John Sharpe my eldest son and his heirs forever and that until such time as the said surrender be fully made and perfected that he permit and suffer the said Jane my wife during her life and the said John and his heirs after her decease to perceive (NOTE1) and take the rents and profits of the said tenement and lands to her his or their own proper use or behoof without any letter trouble from the said Thomas or his heirs Item I give to my two other daughters Jane and Katherin three hundred pounds to each of them to be paid at their several and respective ages of twenty one years or days of marriage which shall first happen and in case either of them die before they attain the said age or be married then the survivor of them to have the whole sum and in case both die before such time then the whole six hundred pounds to be paid to Mary my eldest daughter Item whereas I doubt that my personal estate will not amount to the full payment of the legacies above mentioned my mind and will is that so much timber and wood shall be felled and sold from my land in Sandhurst as shall amount to two hundred pounds but if it shall happen that my marsh land shall amount to the yearly rent of forty pounds … beyond all charged and reprised then my will is that my son John shall pay the sum of one hundred pounds and the other hundred pounds only to be raised by the sale of wood and timber from my lands at Sandhurst and no more Item my mind and will is that during the several minorities of John and Mary my children the several rents and profits of the Lands and Tenements to them herein devised shall be from time to time be received and taken by Thomas Frewen Esq. and in case he die before they attain their several ages then by Edward Frewen his son by them or one of them to be employed in the education of the said John and Mary according to the true intent and meaning of this my will Item I give to Elizabeth Roots my sister’s daughter the sum of fifteen pounds for the putting of her out to some trade or employment for the gaining of an honest livelihood Item I give to my dear Jane Sharpe all my copyhold tenement and lands wherein I now live and the moiety of those my lands in Sandhurst and Newenden and that farm at Rolvenden lately by me purchased of Mr Floyd for the term of her natural life and do make the said Jane sole executor of this my last Will and Testament John Sharpe the tenth day of February 1682 in the presence of us Ri’ Seamer George Mathews the mark of Richard Boyd
