In the name of God amen The sixteenth day of January 1599 I Anthony Cowper of Warbleton ….. yeoman being sick in body but of good and perfect memory praised be god therefore do ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say

First of all I do will and bequeath my soul to Almighty God my creator saviour and redeemer, also I do will and bequeath my body to be buried in the churchyard of Warbleton aforesaid.

Also I do will and bequeath and my will is that all my household stuff shall immediately after my decease be equally and indifferently shifted and divided into two equal parts and the one half thereof I do give will and bequeath unto Constance my wife and also I do will and bequeath unto the said Constance my wife £15 of good and lawful money of England the which money and one half of my household stuff I will and my will is that my executor shall pay and deliver unto the said Constance my wife within five days after that she the said Constance shall make seal and deliver a good lawful sufficient and absolute discharge acquittance and release unto Thomas Iden of Mountfield in the county aforesaid husbandman his heirs and assigns all manner right title claims interest third jointure and dower whatsoever the said Constance or her assigns shall may might ought or can have or claimed of me unto one messuage or tenement in Vinehall streate within the parish of Mountfield aforesaid called or known by the name of (blank) and of and unto any part or parts thereof and the appurtenances thereof which the said Anthony Cowper did lately sell unto the said Thomas Iden provided always and upon condition and my will is that if the said Constance my wife shall refuse to make such a discharge acquittance and release and shall not make the same as is before ?required in such sufficient manner as the said Thomas Iden by his counsel learned in the law shall devise or draw the said within twelve days after my decease then the said Constance shall not have the one half of my household stuff nor the £15 nor any part of parcel thereof but the said household stuff and £15 of money shall remain unto the executor of this my last will and testament for and during the natural life of the said Constance and after her decease unto John Cowper my brother his heirs and assigns for ever.

I do will and bequeath unto Elizabeth my daughter £25 of good and lawful money of England to be paid unto her when she shall be of the full age of twenty years or before at the discretion of my executor.

All the rest of my goods and chattells household stuff and money my debts and legacies and funeral expenses and charges of proving my will being paid and discharged ..... I will my executor shall put it all in a stock of money as soon as he can or may conveniently and shall pay it unto my son John Cooper when he shall be of the full age of one and twenty years.

And if it happen that my son or my daughter do both die before they receive their portions unmarried and without issue of their bodies lawfully begotten that then their portions shall be equally and indifferently shifted and divided into two parts and the one half thereof shall be indifferently shifted and divided between my brother Thomas Cowper his children and the other half shall remain and be unto my brother William Cowper and his heirs for ever.

And I do make and appoint my said brother William Cowper my sole executor of this my last will and testament. And my will is that my said brother shall keep and bring up and govern my said children and their portions until they come unto the several ages above.

I will and bequeath unto Constance my wife two bushells of wheat and one …... of malt.

Item and will and bequeath my executor for his pains for serving £8 of good and lawful money of England.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal Anthony Cowper his mark, sealed and delivered in the presence of Robert ?Homeden Thomas ?Breche
