Will of Davie Sheffilde of Warbleton

Date signed: 27 Feb 1598, Probate date: 12 Mar 1599

In the name of God amen. The seven and twentieth day of February in the year of our lad god 1598 and in the one and fortieth year of the reign of our most gracious sovereign, lady Queen Elizabeth I Davie Sheffilde of the parish of Warbleton in the county of Sussex being sick in body but sound and perfect of my mind and memory thanks be to God, do make and ordain this my testament and last will in manner and form following

First I bequeath my soul unto Almighty God my maker and redeemer and my body to be buried in the churchyard of Warbleton aforesaid.

Item I will and give unto six poor men that help carry me to church 12 pence apiece and also I will that there shall be bestowed to make them a drinking at my burial five shillings.

Item I will and bequeath unto the poor of Warbleton to be paid within one month after my decease unto Edmund GOWER and Stephen FOSTER by my executors and they at their discretion to distribute it to the poor that have most need twelve shillings.

Item I will and give unto Andrew CHAMPNEY 2s to be paid to him by my executors within one month after my decease.

Item I will and give unto the children of Thomas CHRISTIAN and Alice his wife one horse colt the colt to be put to Martin CHRISTIAN to keep with ……. without the advice of Edmund GOWRE and Stephen FOSTER until such time as they shall think meet and then the colt to be sold and the money to be equally divided between the said children and the money to be put out to the most profit for them by the discretion of Edmund GOWES Stephen FOSTER and Martin CHRISTIAN until they shall severally accomplish the age of one and twenty years and as any of them shall come to age so to receive their equal portion. And if any of the said children do die before they come to age then that portion or portions to be equally divided amongst the other.

Item I will and give to them 20s to be paid by my executor within one year after my decease and also put out to profit for them equally divided as before mentioned.

Item I will and give unto Thomas CADE and Elizabeth CADE the children of Richard CADE and of Catherine his wife one cow which is in the keeping of John LULHAM.

Item I will and give unto Richard CADE and Thomas CHRISTIAN all the money due unto me in the hands of John FULLER of Heathfield equally to be divided between them.

Item I will and give also unto them all my apparel and all my household stuff with all my working tools and all other implements and stuff as are at John WAKETTE and William aCROWTHES at Heathfield at William JONES at Horsmonceusx and at Ambrose ZEEDE at Warbleton or elsewhere the which they shall equally divide between them.

Item I will and give unto Elizabeth COSHAM the daughter of Richard COSHAM and of Elizabeth his wife 40s to be paid to her by my executor if she live to accomplish the age of twenty-one years.

Item I will and give unto Roger SHEFFILDE my brother my purse with the ring and money in to him and my best sword and all my writing bonds bills or other writings with all the money due unto me in them specified or contained whom I do ordain and make my whole executor of this my last will and testament but if the said Roger do refuse to fulfill this my last will then I will that Richard CADE and Thomas CHRISTIAN shall be my executors and have the said purse with the ring and money and all the writings before mentioned and likewise receive all the debts duties and demands due unto me whatsoever and the said Roger not to meddle or disturb them.

Also I do ordain Edmund GOWER and Stephen FOSTER of Warbleton my faithful and trusty overseers to see this will performed. And I will and give unto them for their payment two shillings apiece.
