Will of Thomas Clarke of West Chiltington

In the name of God amen This sixth day of March & in the yeare of our Lord God one Thousand six hundred sixty and six I THOMAS CLARKE of the p[ar]ish of CHILTINGTON in the County of Sussex weaver being weake in body but of p[er]fect remembrance & understanding (Thanks bee to God therefore) doe make this my last will & Testament in forme & manner following First I Commend my soule into the hands of my Savyour Jesus Christ hoping to bee saved by the merits of his death And my body to bee buried in Christyan buryall at the will of my Executrix hereafter named

Item I give to BRIDGETT CLARKE my Eldest daughter the sum[m]e of Fifteene pounds of good English money to bee paid unto her.when shee shall accomplish the age of one & twenty yeares

Item I give to ELIZABETH CLARKE my next daughter the sum[m] of Five pounds of like English money

To MARY CLARKE my third daughter the like sum[m]e of Five pounds of good English money

And to JANE CLARKE my youngest daughter the sum[m]e of five shillings And all these sev[er]all legacys to bee paid unto them ser[er]ally when they shall accomplish their sev[er]all ages of one & Twenty yeares And yf any of all these my daughters happen to dye before they shall accomplish their sev[er]all ages as aforesaid Then my will & meaning is that the proc[i]on of her or them so dying shalbee equally devided among the rest w[hi]ch shalbee living & surviving

The rest of my goods & chattells & substance whatsoever money or money worth (my debts paid funerall & legacys heregiven discharged) I give & bequeath unto ELIZABETH CLARKE my beloved wife whome I doe ordayne & appoint by these p[re]sents to bee the sole Executrix of this my last will & Testament to pay all my debts discharge my funerall & legacys aforemenc[i]oned & to bring upp all these my children till they come to their ser[er]all ages of one & twenty yeares w[i]th the benefit of their stocks And in case the said ELIZABETH CLARKE my wife doe happen to dye before the said JANE CLARKE my youngest daughter shall accomplish her full age I doe hereby intreate & appoynt RICHARD CLARKE my beloved kinsman of STEYNING in the County aforesaid weaver to bee Guardyan to the said JANE CLARKE my daughter to take care of her estate & coppyhold & to bring her upp with the profitt & benefitt of her said Coppyhold & to contribute & hold what he can out of it towards the mayntenance of her & her sisters my children aforesaid And I doe likewise request and by these p[re]sents appoynt the said RICHARD CLARKE my kinsman and THOMAS NORMAN here[?] of CHILTINGTON Malster to bee my Overseers to see this my last will & Testament p[er]formed according to my true intent & meaning And doe give unto them Twelve pence a peece (besides their Charges to bee borne) in token of my love In witness that this is my last will & Testament I the said THOMAS CLARKR have hereunto sett my hand & seale the day & yeare abovewritten THOMAS CLARKE his marke Read signed sealed & deliv[er]ed in the p[re]sence of ALAN CARR GEORGE PALMER

THOMAS CLARKE – the Testator. Thomas’ birth/baptism details are not known. However, on 25 June 1638, in West Chiltington, he married Elizabeth Norman.

ELIZABETH CLARKE – Wife of the Testator. Born Elizabeth Norman. Shortly after her husband’s death Elizabeth remarried to John Sturt, a weaver of Chichester. No marriage record has been found, but a licence was issued for the marriage on 5 August 1667. Was she the Elizabeth wife of John Sturt buried in West Chiltington on 13 May 1680? John Sturt was buried in West Chiltington on 25 April 1695.

BRIDGET, ELIZABETH, MARY & JANE CLARKE – daughters of the Testator. All were under 21 at the time that Thomas Clarke made his Will. Elizabeth was baptised in West Chiltington on 7 March 1640/1.
