In the Name of God Amen I SAMUEL ADDAMS ALIAS HUMPHERY of WEST CHILTINGTON in ... Sussex cordwainer being sick and weak in body but of perfect minde and memory praised be God for it Doe here make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and Forme following First I com[m]end my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God Trusting in the Merritts of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeemer & my Body to be Buried in Christian Buriall And as to my Worldly Estate I dispose thereof as Followeth Imprimis I doe here Will & desire my Brother NATHANIEL ADDAMS ALIAS HUMPHERY to Surrender up all his Right Title & Interest in my Copyhold Messuage and Tenem[en]t in the Manner of CHILTINGTON into the Hands of the Lord of the said Mannor to the use & behoofe of my Son JOHN ADDAMS ALIAS HUMPHERY and that my son JOHN ADDAMS may be admitted into the said Messuage House and all & every th'App[ur]t[en]ancs thereto now belonging at the next Court Baron after my Death to be holden for the said Mannor to be addmitted after my Wife according to the Custom of the said Mannor Item I doe here make and ordaine my Dear & Loving Wife JANE ADDAMS and my son JOHN ADDAMS Joynt Executors of this my last Will & Testament and Doe here will & Desire them my said Executors to pay all my Debts And after my Debts and Funeral Expenses together with the Probate of this my Will is satisfied & paid I doe here will that the Rest of my Goods and Chattles should be applyed toward the Bringing up of my Children and for their Maintenance and Educac[i]on And when all my Children are brought up and come to their full Age of One and Twenty years Then I doe here will that what Goods and Chattles my Executors shall have of mine to be Equally Divided Amongst all my Children And Further my Will is that JANE my Wife whom I have made Executor with my son JOHN should Reserve what Goods She pleases for her maintenance During her Life in case of want In witness hereof I have here unto this my last Will and Testament sett my hand & Seal this Eleventh day of September in the year of Our Lord One [Thousand] Seven Hundred & Twenty One- SAMUEL ADDAMS ALIAS HUMPHERY his mark & Seale – Signed Sealed published & Declared by the said SAMUEL ADDAMS ALS HUMPHREY to be his last Will & Testament in the p[re]sence of us EDM[UND] NORMAN GRACE WILMINGTON her marke the mark of JOANE MARE]

Notes about this will:

SAMUEL ADAMS ALIAS HUMPHREY – the Testator (1663/4 – 1723). Samuel was baptised in West Chiltington on 2 February 1663/4, son of John Adams. On 11 February 1696/7 he married Jane Mayer, in West Chiltington. They went on to have 7 children. He was a Cordwainer, and he and his family lived at Lakerscroft in the centre of West Chiltington. Samuel was buried in West Chiltington on 15 November 1723.

JANE ADAMS ALIAS HUMPHREY – Wife of the Testator (? – 1737). Jane’s parentage and date of baptism have not yet been traced. She was a sister of Thomas Mare of Thakeham,. Who died in 1720, and who mentioned her in his Will. She also had a brother John, and sister Elizabeth, who had married John Nye in Shipley in 1706, and who died before 1720. Jane died in 1737, and was buried in West Chiltington on 24 June 1737.

NATHANIEL ADAMS ALIAS HUMPHREY – Brother of the Testator (1670 – 1740). Nathaniel was baptised in West Chiltington on16 October 1670, son of John Adams. He was buried in West Chiltington on 16 June 1740, at the age of 69.

JOHN ADAMS ALIAS HUMPHREY – Son of the Testator ( 1697/8 – 1771). John was baptised in West Chiltington on 6 March 1697/8, son of Samuel Adams. He married a woman called Ann, although no marriage date and location has been positively identified as yet. Ann died in 1743, and was buried in West Chiltington on 11 April 1743. John was buried in West Chiltington on 6 September 1771.
