Will of John Adams of West Chiltington

In the name of God Amen the Eleventh day of Aprill accordinge to ye Computac[i]on of ye Church of England I JOHN ADAMS of WEST CHILTINGTON in the County of Sussex yeom[an] beinge weake but in good & p[er]fect remembrance praised bee God doe make & ordaine this my last Will & Testam[en]t in mann[e]r & forme followinge revokeinge all other Wills & Testam[en]ts Vizt First I give & bequeath my Soul into ye hands of Almighty [God] who gave it & to Jesus Christ my only Savio[u]r and Redeem[e]r hopeing through his meritorious death& passion to receive free pardon of all my Sins and as for my body to bee buryed in Christian buryall att ye discrec[i]on of my Overseers & Ex[ecu]tors hereafter named

First I give to my Son JAMES all my Free Land to hee & his heires if lawfully begotten by his owne body otherwise to returne backe to my Sons JOHN & SAMUELL to bee equally divided between them both or if my Coppy hold called by the name of LINTOTTS should happen to fall to my Son JAMES then my Free Land to my two sons JOHN & SAMUELL afores[ai]d

It[e]m I give to my Son NATHANIELL one Shilling & ye Iron plate standinge behinde my fire to bee p[ai]d by my Ex[ecu]tors when he shall come to ye full age of one & twenty yeares

It[e]m I give to my daughter MARY the sum[me] of threescore pounds but if any of my Sons aforenamed should happen to dy before they come the full age of one & twenty yeares in all I give to my daughter the Sum[me] of one hundred pounds all to bee paid by my Ex[ecu]tors when shee shall come to ye full age of one & twenty yeares or att her day of marriage w[hi]ch happeneth first

It[e]m I give more as followeth two Chests of Linnen Standinge in my bed Chamber

It[e]m all ye rest of my goods houses Lands Leases Chattells & moveables whatsoev[er] I give to my two sons JOHN & SAMUELL who I make my full & whole Ex[ecu]tors of this my last Will & Testam[en]t but if it happen my daughter MARY doe dy before shee doe come to age ye Linnen is to bee divided between all ye rest of my Sons and aloe all ye rest of my Land to JOHN & SAMUELL to bringe up my Children until they come to age & I desire my beloved brother JOHN TURNER & his Wife & their Son JOHN TURNER & HENRY HARWOOD to bee Overseers of this my last Will whereto I sett my hand & Seale & the day and yeare first above written Mem[orandum] ye interlined in three lines ye 15 & 16 & 17 was done before ye Sealinge hereof & the rest was putt out before / JOHN ADAMS his m[ar]ke / Signed & Sealed in the p[rese]nce of us HENRY HARWOOD MARY HARWOOD her m[ar]ke SUSAN JUPP her m[ar]ke

Archdeaconry Court of Chichester – STCI/27 f 215b

Testator – JOHN ADAMS (1623/4 -). Was he the John Humfrie, son of Thomas, baptised in West Chiltington on 16 March 1623/4? He died somewhen between 1679 – 1681. Son - JAMES. His dates of birth and baptism are not known, but he either born pre-1662, or between 1664 – 1670. As an adult he moved to Shipley, but there is no record of any marriage or children for him. Instead he left his property and goods to the children of his brother Samuel. James was buried in West Chiltington on 19 October 1734. He had made his Will on 29 March 1732, and it was proved on 3 January 1734/5.

Son – SAMUEL (1663/4 - 1723). Samuel was baptised in West Chiltington on 2 February 1663/4. On 11 February 1696/7 Samuel Adams alias Humphreye married Jane Mayer, in West Chiltington. Samuel was buried in West Chiltington on 15 November 1723.
