In the name of God Amen I JOHN ADAMS OTHERWISE HUMPHREY of WEST CHILTINGTON in ... SUSSEX cordwainer being of sound and disposing Mind Memory and Understanding do make and declare my last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to say)

After payment of all my just Debts (particularly what I do or may owe to Mr CHARLWOOD HAMMOND on mortgage or otherwise ) and my Funeral and Testamentary Expenses and subject thereto I give and bequeath to my wife MARY All the clear Rents Issues and profits of all my Customary or Copyhold Messuages Lands Heraditaments and premises holden of the several Manors of NYETIMBER and CHILTINGTON or any other Manor or Manors whatsoever (and which I have surrendered to the Uses of my Will) for the term of her natural life as or in the nature of her Bench And I also give and bequeath unto her my said Wife for her life the use of all my Household Goods and Furniture and of all other my Goods and Chattels and also the Interest Dividends and Annual proceeds of the clear Residue of my Personal Estate and Effects of what nature or kind soever the same may be for her own Use and Benefit

And from and after the decease of my said Wife I give and devise All those my free pieces or parcels of land containing two Acres more or less lying in SINNOCK called BROWNS and holden of the said Manor of CHILTINGTON with the Appertenances unto my Daughter ANN the wife of RICHARD BATCHELOR To hold to her my said Daughter ANN and her Heirs for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor of CHILTINGTON free and clearly exonerated of and from all Debts Charges and Incumbrances whatsoever

Also from and after my said wife's decease I authorize and empower my Executors hereinafter named and the survivor of them and convey to such person or persons as shall be willing to purchase the same All that my Customary or Copyhold messuage or Tenement Barn and Hovel called LINTOTTS with the Garden Orchard and the several Crofts or Closes of land containing about fifteen Acres with the Appertenances holden of the said Manor of NYETIMBER and also to sell and dispose of all the saleable parts of the residue of my personal Estate and effects and to convert the whole thereof into money and also to collect and get in all Monies then owing to my Estate and the money thereby arising and all other the residue of my said personal Estate and Effects to pay and divide equally amongst my four other children JOHN EDWARD MARY the wife of EDWARD HENLEY and SARAH the wife of THOMAS BATTCOCK or such of them as shall be then living and the child or children of such of them as shall be then dead and such children taking their respective parents share equally to be divided amongst them if more than one And I give and bequeath the same accordingly And it is my Will that my son EDWARD may have the first offer of being the purchaser of my said Copyhold premises directed to be sold as aforesaid at a fair valuation to be made by two indifferent persons one to be chosen by himself and the other by my Executors or the survivor of them his Executors or Administrators and I direct my said son EDWARD in case he shall not choose to become the purchaser to make and execute (but not at his own expense) all such Surrenders Releases or other Act as shall be reasonably required of him for effectually conveying and assuring the said premises to the purchaser or purchasers thereof I hereby nominate and appoint my said son JOHN and MAURICE SAYERS of WEST CHILTINGTON aforesaid yeoman Executors in trust of this my Will and direct that they shall not be answerable for any more monies or effects than shall come to their hands respectively nor for any Loss happening to my Estate without the wilful neglect or default of them or one of them nor one of them for the other of them but each for his own Acts Deeds Receipts and Defaults only and that they may out of the Money coming to their Hands reimburse themselves respectively their just and necessary Expenses and Disbursements and reasonably for their time and trouble In Witness whereof I the said JOHN ADAMS OTHERWISE HUMPHREY have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and seal this fourth Day of July in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Three – JOHN ADAMS OTHERWISE HUMPHREY (LS) - Signed sealed published and declared by the said JOHN ADAMS OTHERWISE HUMPHREY the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us JAMES ROBINSON RICHD HERRINGTON WM HALE

This Will and Codicil were proved before the Revd James Baden Carpenter Clerk Surrogate on the 14th Day of AUGUST 1805 on the Oath of JOHN ADAMS OTHERWISE HUMPHREY the Testator's son one of the Executors named therein (power being reserved for granting the like to MAURICE SAYERS the other Executor when &c with a Day for an Inventory
