Will of Alexander Ludgater of West Chiltington

In the name of God Amen I ALEXANDER LUDGATER of WEST CHILTINGTON in the County of Sussex yeoman being sure that death is certaine but when and where uncertain I have thought first to make this my last Will and Testam[en]t in mann[e]r and forme following. First I bequeath my Soul into ye hands of almighty God ye Father my Creator & maker and to Jesus Christ my redeem[er] and p[re]serv[e]r and to ye holy Spirit my Sanctifier and p[re]serv[er] to whom bee Glory & praise an[d][?] world without end and my body to bee buryed Eighteen inches deeper then any man is buryed for depth

It[e]m I give to my daughter MARY LUDGATER ye Sum of threescore pounds to bee paid to her within two whole years after my decease by my Ex[ecu]tors

It[e]m I give to ANDREW LUDGATER my eldest Son my dwellinge house except ye new parlour end and ye home plott and p[ar]t of ye Well I give to HENRY but ye garden and downe grounds & ye copye feild and upper end of ye Six Acres beinge three Closes and ye Garden to my Parlour and ye end of the barne next to ye horse Stables & part of ye flower to thresh in

Item I give to HENRY LUDGATER ye parlour end of ye house and the home plott & use of ye Well and ye new end of the barne & ye Close feild & ye three Closes and ye North west beinge four in all

It[e]m I give to JOHN LUDGATER my youngest son the west of ye feild and the use of ye flower and ye little stable joyninge to itt and the barnefeild and ye lower end of ye Six acres and ye parlour feild and ye meadow [blank] him in all four Closes to hee and his heirs for ev[er]and the last To b… and their heires for ev[er] not to sell itt to any body [blank] and if any of these my Children should dy before yt they enjoy theie p[ar]ts that then it is to bee divided to ye other Sons payinge ye [blank] out of ye said Lands [blank]

It[e]m I make MARY LUDGATER my Wife my whole Ex[ecu]trix paying my debts and Legacies & Fun[er]all Charges and I give her the third of these Lands soe longe as Shee liveth a Widdow and if Shee marry againe then butt her thirds [blank] and if Shee shall refuse to bee my Ex[ecu]trix yt my Will is that HENRY and JOHN my two Sons shall be my Ex[ecu]tors and pay their mother but twenty Shillings within a month after my decease and I depute my two friends JAMES LA …. of [blank] and EDWARD LUDGATER to bee Ov[er]seers to see this my Will p[er]formed & to bee paid their charges & expences by my Ex[ecu]tors In Witnesse hereto I have sett my hand and Seal this fourth day of July 1682. INFORMATION ON THE PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THE WILL:

ALEXANDER LUDGATER – the Testator (1630 – 1685) Alexander was baptised in Angmering on 4 April 1630, son of Edward Ludgater (and his wife Tamsin) On 8 June 1657, in Angmering, Alexander married Mary Foreman. Alexander was buried in West Chiltington on 23 April 1685.

MARY LUDGATER (nee FOREMAN) – the Testator’s Wife (1637 – 1693/4) Mary was baptised in West Chiltington on 23 November 1637, daughter of John and Mary Foreman.

She was buried in West Chiltington on 13 February 1693/4.

MARY LUDGATER – the Testator’s Daughter (1658/9 - Mary was baptised in East Preston on 30 January 1658/9.

ANDREW LUDGATER – the Testator’s Son (1662 – 1692) Andrew was baptised in West Chiltington on 26 December 1662, son of Alexander Ludgater, and was buried there on 11 May 1692, aged 29.

HENRY LUDGATER – the Testator’s Son His baptism date is not known, but he was younger than his brother Andrew (born 1662), and older than his brother John (born 1671). On 4 December 1694 Henry married Mary Blake, in West Chiltington. At least 2 children were born to the couple in West Chiltington: Mary, baptised in 1697, and Luke baptised in 1698. Nothing further is currently known about the family.

JOHN LUDGATER – the Testator’s Son (1671 – 1732) John was baptised in West Chiltington on 10 November 1671, son of Alissander Ledgetar. On 15 March 1693/4 he married Jane Driver, in West Chiltington. The couple had at least 5 children, all baptised in West Chiltington: John (1698), Elizabeth (1700), Anne (1702/3), Thomas (1705) and Hannah (1710). John was buried in West Chiltington on 16 July 1732. Jane was either buried on 9 September 1737, as Jane Lidbiter, or on 27 April 1754, as Jane Ludgater, widow.

EDWARD LUDGATER – Overseer of the Will. Edward was probably Alexander’s brother Edward, who hads been baptised in Angmering on 10 November 1616.
