Will of William Hooker of Tillington

This is the last will and testament of me William Hooker of Tillington in the country of Sussex common carrier made the fourteenth day of Fenruary in the year or our lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty first.

I direct that all and singular my just debts, funeral expenses and the expenses of the probate and executorship of this my will shall be paid and discharged. Also I give and bequeath unto my son John Hooker all my household goods, furniture, ready monies and other monies and all and singular other my personal estate property and effects whatsoever and wheresoever which I may be possessed of interested in or entitled unto the time of my decease to hold the same unto the said John Hooker, his executor and administrators upon the trusts and to and for the intents and purposes hereinafter mentioned . (That is to say) upon trust that he the said John Hooker his executors and administrators shall and do in due time cut gather and harvest the wheat and other produce (except as hereinafter mentioned) now growing or to be growing in or upon my field garden and orchard in the parish of Tillington aforesaid which I rent of Mr Newland and also I shall and do at the expiration of nine calendar months from the time of my decease by sale or sales by public auction or by private contract sell and dispose of all of my said household goods, furniture and the said wheat and other produce (except as hereinafter mentioned) and all such other part and parts of my said personal estate property and effects as may not consist of money at the best price and for the most money that can or may be reasonably gotten for the same and convert the whole thereof into money (except only my horse and cart and the harnesses and everything belonging to the said horse and cart and the lares growing in the said field and my rough greatcoat and watch and my best feather bed and best chest of veneered drawers all which I dispose of as follows.

(That is to say) I give and bequeath my said horse and cart and the harnesses and everything belonging to the said horse and cart unto my said son John Hooker for his own use he paying therefore the sum of forty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain or accounting for the same sum and also my said greatcoat and watch unto my said son John Hooker for his own use

and I give and bequeath the use and usage of my said feather bed and chest of drawers unto my dear wife Elizabeth Hooker for her natural life and from and after the decease of my said wife I give and bequeath the same feather bed and chest of drawers unto between and amongst my four children Mary the wife of Charles Fletcher, Sarah the wife of John Bentley, John Hooker and Esther Hooker for their respective use in equal shares as tenants in common and not as joint tenants

and with respect to all and singular the said trust monies as well the monies to be produced by such sale or sales aforesaid as also the said sum of forty pounds so to be paid or accounted for by the said John Hooker and likewise the monies of which I may die possessed I direct that he my said son John Hooker shall and do divide the whole thereof into five equal parts and shall and do pay one such equal part thereof unto my said wife Elizabeth Hooker for her own use and another such equal pay thereof unto my said daughter Mary Fletcher for her own use and another such equal part thereof unto my said daughter Sarah Bentley for her own use and another such equal part thereof unto my said daughter Esther Hooker for her own use and shall and do retain and keep another such equal part thereof unto himself the said John Hooker for his own use

and I do hereby make and appoint my said son John Hooker sole executor of this my will hereby directing that he shall not be answerable or accountable for any accidental losses nor for any more monies or effects than he the said John Hooker shall actually receive.

In witness thereof I the said William Hooker the testator have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal that day and year first above written William Hooker

Signed, sealed, published and declared by the above named William Hooker the testator as for and to be his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have subscribed or names as witnesses:
