St. James's, January 28, 1777. WHereas it has been humbly represented to the King, That on the 11th, 13th and 14th Days of the present Month of January, the Barns and Outhouses of Mr. Hugh Penfold, Tenant to the Lord Viscount Hampden, at Whickham in the Parish of Steyning in the County of Sussex, were repeatedly set on Fire, and Part of them destroyed, by some malicious and evil-minded Persons at present unknown ; His Majesty, for the better discovering and bringing to Justice the Person or Persons concerned in the said Offences, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them, (except the Person or Persons who actually set Fire to the said Barns or Outhouses) who shall discover his or her Accomplice or Accomplices in the said Offences, so that be, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. SUFFOLK. And, as a farther Encouragement, the Lord Viscount Hampton doth hereby promise a Reward of THIRTY GUINEAS, and the said Mr. Hugh Penfold a Reward of TWENTY GUINEAS, to any Person or Persons making such Discovery as aforesaid (except as before excepted) ; the said Rewards to be paid upon, the Conviction of any one or more of the Offenders.
