Will of William Brooker of West Chiltington

In the Name of God Amen This five and twentieth day of June in the year of our Lord god one Thousand six hundred fiftie and eight I WILLIAM BROOKER of CHILTINGTON in the Countie of Sussex yeoman being weake in body but of good remembrance thankes be give god therefore calling to mynde the uncertainty of my life as to worldly matters do make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following

Imprimis I give to the poore of the parish of CHILTINGTON aforesaid the summe of thirteene shillings and fower pence to be distributed amongst them within one month after my decease

Item for all my freehold landes lyeing in the Parrishes of THAKEHAM and CHILTINGTON aforesaid within the County of Sussex aforesaid called by the name or names of SHOOTERS and TAYLORS my will and meaning is And here by these presents I doe give will devise and bequeath the said Tenement and landes aforesaid called SHOOTERS and TAYLORS with all their appurtenances unto AGNES BROOKER my beloved wife and her assignes dureing the terme of her naturall life And after the death and decease of her the said AGNES BROOKER my now wife I doe by these presents give grant will and bequeath the said tenement and landes with the appurtenances called SHOOTERS and TAYLORS unto WILLIAM SKINNER of CHILTINGTON aforesaid my brother and his heires forever but upon condic[i]on Not withstanding that the said WILLIAM SKINNER my brother and his heires doe well and truely pay or cause to be paid , as for those landes the severall sommes of tenne poundes a peece to SUSAN BROOKER and SARAH BROOKER the daughters of SAMUELL BROOKER my brother late deceased of BILLINGSHURST within one whole yeare after the decease of AGNES BROOKER my wife aforenamed of lawfull English money . And my will and meaning further is That in case eyther those two SUSAN BROOKER or SARAH BROOKER shall happen to dye before the said tyme of payment afore lymitted, the porc[i]on of her that so deceased shall remayne to the other of the two, which shall be living And surviving

Item I give unto SAMUELL BROOKER of BILLINGSHURST within the County of Sussex Blacksmith my brothers sonne the full and whole somme of twenty pounds of lawfull English money he one tenne pounds of it to be paid unto him by my executrix hereafter named within one halfe yeare after my decease And the other tenne pounds to be paid unto him by her within one whole yeare after the said first payment of the first tenne pounds but upon condic[i]on not withstanding that he the said SAMUELL BROOKER my brothers sonne make seale and deliver unto the said AGNES BROOER my Executrix and WILLIAM SKINNER aforenamed my brother and his heires a general release for himselfe and his heires for ever

Item I give and bequeath unto AGNES SAYERS the wife of EDMUND SAYERS of PULBOROUGH my daughter in lawe the somme of five pounds of lawfull English money to bee paid unto her w[i]thin one yeare after my decease

Item I give unto the two children of the said AGNES SAYERS THOMAS SAYERS and EDMUND SAYERS the somme of five shillings a peece

Item I give to JOHN FRENCH HANNAH FRENCH WILLIAM WELCH and ALICE WELCH my sisters children and to WILLIAM SKINNER and AGNES the Children of WILLIAM SKINNER my Brother and to the two Children of ALICE GRINFIELD alias PIPER deceased my sisters daughter the severall sommes of five shillings a peece to be paid unto all these severally when they shall accomplish their severall ages of one and twenty yeares

Item I give unto all my servants which shalbe living with me at the tyme of my decease the severall sommes of two shillings and sixpence a peece

The rest of my goods and substance whatsoever Cattell Chattels moneyes or money worth whatsoever my debts and legacies above given paid and funeral expences discharged I give & bequeath unto AGNES BROOKER my welbeloved wife whome I doe by these presents make appoint and ordayne to be the sole Executrix of this my last will and testament And doe intreate HENRY PARKHURST of WASHINGTON yeoman and CHRISTOPHER SOLE of WARMINGHURST to be my overseers to see this my last will & Testament preformed according to my true intent and meaninge And I give unto them five shillings a peece for their paines In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and Seale the day and yeare above written WILLIAM BROOKER his marke Read Signed Sealed and delivered in the presence of ALAN CARR RICHARD LEWIS JOHN TOTTEY his marke

This will was proved at London the Eleaventh day of Februarie in the yeare of our Lord god one thousand six hundred fiftie and eight English style Before the Judges for Probate of wils and granting of administrac[i]ons lawfully authorized By the oathe and in the name of AGNES BROOKER the relict and sole executrix therein named To whome was committed Administrac[i]on of all and singular the goods chattels and debts of the said deceased shee being first sworne truely to administer the same.

WILLIAM BROOKER – the Testator. Was he the William Brooker mentioned in the Will of Robert Ganton of West Chiltington (1611)? Robert Ganton was his stepfather, his mother’s second husband. Was he the William Brooker of Thakeham who married Jane Mills of Warminghurst in Chichester St Peter the Great on 4 February 1619/20? Jane wife of William Brooker was buried in West Chiltington on 23 May 1638. Did William then remarry on 23 June 1638, one month after his wife’s burial, to Agnes Pannett, a widow, in Warminghurst?

AGNES BROOKER – the Testator’s Wife. She was previously married to William Pannett, who died in Warminghurst between December 1636 and January 1636/7. Agnes was the executrix of his Will. In his Will William Pannett mentioned, in addition to his wife, Agnes, his daughters Mary and Agnes and a son William. On 23 June 1638 Agnes married William Brooker in Warminghurst.

SUSAN & SARAH BROOKER – nieces of the Testator. Sarah was baptised in Billingshurst on 28 October 1632. Susan was baptised there on 15 January 1636/7. Both were daughters of Samuel Brooker, William’s brother.

AGNES SAYERS – the Testator’s daughter in law [step-daughter). She was the daughter of William Pannett and his wife Agnes. On 10 Sept 1654 in Pulborough, she married Edmund Sayers. He was of Pulborough, and she was of Chiltington. She died in April 1660, and was buried in Pulborough on 28 April 1660.

JOHN & HANNAH FRENCH, WILLIAM & ALICE WELCH. On 24 February 1611/2 Alice Brooker of Thakeham married Nicholas French in West Chiltington, by licence. On 12 November 1621 Alice French married Humphrey Welch, in Thakeham.
