In the Name of God Amen I JOHN HARWOOD of the parish of WEST CHILTINGTON in the County of Sussex Singleman being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect Mind and memory praise be therefore given unto Almighty God calling to Mind the uncertainty of my Life and being willing to Dispose of that Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me Do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to say) I commend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God Who gave it and my Body to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors here afternamed and as for my Copyhold Land and Worldly Estate Goods and Chattles I give devise and bequeath in manner Following

First I will that my Debts and Funerall charges with the probate of this my last Will and Testament

Whereas on or about the Sixth Day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty One by the Coppy of Admission of JOHN HARWOOD and HENRY HARWOOD Hold for their Lives and the longest liver of them All that Barn Hovel Gateroom and Twelve acres of land called JORDANS with One acre more lying at the East end of the Mead called the EAST MEAD with Right of Commoning lying at NORTH HEATH COMMON all which Premises Lying and being within the Mannor of NUTBOURNE in the Parish of PULBOROUGH in the County aforesaid And Whereas it was agreed by and between the said JOHN HARWOOD and HENRY HARWOOD for several valuable considerations between them that HENRY HARWOOD gave Bond that he the said HENRY HARWOOD would at the Request Cost and Charges of the said JOHN HARWOOD his Heirs or Assignes Surrender all his Right and Interest in the said Premises to such Uses as the said JOHN HARWOOD should direct. Now by the virtue of this bond made between us and made on or about the Thirtieth Day of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Seven relation being there unto had doth more fully appear Now my Will meaning and desire is that my Brother HENRY HARWOOD surrender all his right Title Interest claim and demand of in and unto the said Copyhold Premises unto my Brother THOMAS HARWOOD and to the Heirs or Assignes of the said THOMAS HARWOOD at the First court that shall happen after my decease according to the Custom of the said Mannor and if the said HENRY HARWOOD should refuse to Surrender all his right as aforesaid Then the said bond to be void and if the said HENRY HARWOOD should refuse to surrender all his right as aforesaid Then my Will and meaning is that all the right of the said bond shall remain to the said THOMAS HARWOOD his Heirs of Assignes with all its strength power and virtue But after the admittance of my Brother THOMAS HARWOOD in the Premises aforesaid then my Will and meaning is that my Brother THOMAS HARWOOD shall pay yearly and every year out of the Yearly Rent of the premises aforesaid unto my loving Mother ANN HARWOOD the Sum of Four Pounds of Lawfull Money of Great Britain by Two half Yearly payments (that is to say) Forty Shillings Every half year without any Deduction or Abatement Whatsoever during the Term of her natural life Likewise I give and bequeath unto my Brother THOMAS HARWOOD all my Wearing Apparell all my Goods and Utensills to him and his Heirs and Assignes for ever Likewise after my Debts Funeral Charges and the probate of this my last Will and Testament is paid and Discharged the remainder of my Money I give and bequeath in manner Following (that is to say)

Unto my Mother ANN HARWOOD My Brother HENRY HARWOOD my brother THOMAS HARWOOD and the Three Daughters of my brother in Law RICHARD JUPP (that is to say) ANN JUPP, ELIZABETH JUPP and KATHERINE JUPP all to have share and share alike And if any of my Money that is out if it should happen to be lost then each of them to bear part of that Loss Likewise my Will and meaning is that the Three Daughters if my Brother in Law shall have their parts paid unto them as they shall come to their Respective age of One and Twenty but in case one or more of them should die before they come to the age of One and Twenty then the other that are living to have share and share alike of the part of the Deceased and to be paid as aforesaid

Likewise I do appoint and ordain My Brother HENRY HARWOOD and my Brother THOMAS HARWOOD Joint and Sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said JOHN HARWOOD the Testator have hereunto set my Hand and Seale the Twenty Eighth Day of December in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Nine JOHN HARWOOD Sign[e]d sealed published and declared to be the last Will and Testament of the said JOHN HARWOOD the Testator DOROTHY WILLARD her mark JANE WILMER NATH[ANIE]LL WILMER

This Will was proved before Mr JOHN COPLEY Clerk Surrogate &c on the Thirtieth Day of September In the year of our Lord 1760 by the oaths of HENRY HARWOOD and THOMAS HARWOOD natural and lawfull Brothers of the said Dec[eas]ed and the Sole Executors of his said Will To whom &c Well and truly &c Sworn Saving &c.

John Harwood – the Testator

John was baptised in West Grinstead on 25 October 1716, the eldest son of John Harwood and Ann Sayers. John was buried in West Chiltington on 1 January 1760.

Ann Harwood – Mother of the Testator

Ann was born Ann Sayers. She was baptised in West Chiltington on 14 May 1690, daughter of Thomas Sayers and Susan Jupp On 23 June 1715, in West Chiltington, she married John Harwood (1688 – 1754).. She died in 1761, although her burial has not yet been found.

Henry Harwood – Brother of the Testator

Henry was baptised in West Grinstead on 23 May 1718. He married in Warminghurst on 18 June 1756 to Elizabeth Grant. Henry was buried on 14 April 1785 in Thakeham

Thomas Harwood – Brother of the Testator

Thomas was baptised in West Grinstead on 13 April 1721. He married Mary Parsons in West Chiltington on 17 May 1756 He was buried in West Chiltington on 20 September 1778.

Richard Jupp – Brother in Law of the Testator

Richard had married Elizabeth Harwood of Findon in Ashington on 16 January 1748/9. Elizabeth Harwood was baptised in West Grinstead on 16 May 1722, daughter of John Harwood and Ann Sayers
