Whitehall, March 16, 1771. Whereas it has been humbly represented to the King, that on Tuesday last the 12th Instant, about Eight of the Clock in the Evening, a Fire was discovered in a Room in the Town of New Shoreham in the County of Sussex, wherein was a large Quantity of Oakum, and which Room is under a large Sail Warehouse belonging to Mr. Hugh Roberts, of the said Town, and adjoining to several Houses and Shops belonging to Meff. Innot, Bartlet, and Pelham, containing Pitch, Tar, Rofin, &c. and that there is great Reason to believe the same was wilfully and maliciously set on Fire by some evil minded Person or Persons unknown : His Majesty, for the better discovering and bringing to Justice the Person or Persons concerned therein, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them, (except the Person who did actually set Fire to the said Room) who shall discover his, her, or their Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they may be apprehended and convicted thereof. DUNK HALIFAX. And as a farther Encouragement, the above-named Mr. Hugh Roberts doth hereby promise a Reward of FIFTY POUNDS to any Person making such Discovery as aforesaid, (except as before excepted; ) the said Reward to be paid, at his House at New Shoreham aforesaid, upon the Conviction of any one of the Offenders.
