In the Name of God I MARY WARD of WESTGRINSTEAD in the County of Sussex Widow do make publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament and First I give and bequeath unto my Cousin WILLIAM DENE[?] of WESTMESTON in the County aforesaid Husbandman and in case of his death to his Daughter the sum of one hundred pounds unto MARY LOVERIDGE the Wife of ALLEN LOVERIDGE of DITCHLING in the said County Plumber and Glazier the sum of Fifty pounds and unto JOHN FRIEND wi?e[?] of HURSTPIERPOINT who now lives with me the like Sum of Fifty pounds to be paid unto them the said WILLIAM DENE MARY LOVERIDGE and JOHN FRIEND within the space of twelve Calendar Months next after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my God daughter MARTHA ANNE CHALLICE[?] one of the daughters of The Reverend Mr CHALLICE late Curate of COWFOLD the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid unto her at her age of twenty one years or day of Marriage which shall first happen (with Interest for the same at five pounds per cent in the mean time towards her Maintenance Also I give and bequeath unto THOMAS WHITEMAN of LEWES in the said County Taylor the sum of Fifty pounds to be paid unto him within the space of twelve Calendar Months next after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto JOHN WOOLVIN of COWFOLD in the County aforesaid Farmer the sum of twenty pounds to be paid unto him within the space of six Calendar Months after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto each of my servants who shall be living with me at the time of my decease the Sum of Five pounds to be paid unto them respectively in one Month after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto the poor of the Parish of WESTGRINSTEAD the Sum of ten[?] pounds to be paid into the hands of th Churchwardens of the said Parish for the time being to be by them distributed unto and amongst such objects of Charity Inhabitants of the said Parish as they shall think fit and proper

I desire to be buried at WESTGRINSTEAD by the side of my late Husband RICHARD WARD Gentleman and direct my Executors hereinafter named within six Months after my death to cause a death leaving the Manner of my Funeral and the placing such Marble Slab to the direction of my said Executors and subject to the payment of the several legacies by me herein before given and bequeathed and the discharge of my debts Funeral and Testamentary Expenses I will give and bequeath unto my Friends THOMAS CHARLES MODWIN of HORSHAM Gentleman and JAMES COOK of BOLNORE in the parish of CUCKFIELD in the said County of Sussex Gentleman all and every sum and sums of Money due upon Securities or otherwise Corn Cattle live and dead stock Plate Linen China Furniture Goods Chattels Righ [?] to Credits and Personal Estate and Effects of what nature or kind soever whereof I shall be possessed or where unto I shall or may in any mannor be entitled at the time of my decease To hold the same unto the said THOMAS CHARLES MODWIN and JAMES COOK their Executors Administrators and Assigns to and for their own sole and absolute use benefit and disposal as Tenants in Common And Lastly I hereby make constitute and appoint them the said THOMAS CHARLES MODWIN and JAMES COOKE Executors of this my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said MARY WARD have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Fifteenth day of OCTOBER in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two MARY WARD Signed Sealed Published and declared by the above named MARY WARD as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in her presence at her request and in the presence of each other Subscribed our names as Witnesses – WM REDMAN WM REDMAN Junr

This Will was proved at London the fourth day of NOVEMBER in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two before the Right Honourable Sir WILLIAM WYNNE Knight Doctor of Law Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oaths of THOMAS CHARLES MODWIN and JAMES COOKE the Executors named in the said Will to whom Administration of all and singular the Goods Chattells and Credits of the said deceased was granted having been first sworn by Commission duly to administer.
