EDWARD JUPP – the Testator

No baptism has been found for Edward, to date. However, he was probably born between 1615 (when his brother John, who was the eldest son was born) and 1624. Edward took the Protestation Oath in 1641/2, indicating that he was at least 18 at that time. His father was John Jupp, who died in West Chiltington in 1647/8. (Will proved 8 February 1647/8). His mother’s name is unknown at present. No marriages have been traced for Edward to date, and no wife’s name is currently known. However, it does appear that he must have married at least twice. In his Will Edward charged his daughter Susan ‘to be always kind & loving to her mother in Lawe. And I doe earnestly Begg the Same from her Husband that they may live in love and the fear of God’, suggesting that Edward’s wife was not Susan’s biological mother. As Susan was baptised on 19 April 1652 Edward’s first marriage was probably in 1651 or earlier. His wife was apparently a widow of a man with the surname Scutt. Susan was the only surviving child of Edward, at the time of his death. However, he appears to have had at least 3 other children, but a long time apart, suggesting the possibility of other children for whom records no longer survive. Edward was buried in West Chiltington on 11 June 1689.

THOMAS & SUSAN SAYRES – Daughter of the Testator. Susan was baptised in Rudgwick on 19 April 1652. Her marriage to Thomas Sayres of Pulborough has not been found to date, but probably took place between 1679 (when Susan Jupp was a witness to a Will) and 1682, when the couple’s eldest child was baptised in Pulborough. The couple lived in Pulborough for some years, moving to West Chiltington between 1688 -1690. They probably moved as a result of Susan’s father’s death. In his Will Edward leff Thomas the lease of some land in West Chiltington. The couple had 6 children together. Susan was buried in West Chiltington on 13 June 1693. Thomas went to marry again – to Mary Jayes in West Chiltington on 28 July 1698. They then went on to have a further 8 children. Thomas was buried in West Chiltington on 23 August 1713.

ELIZABETH CHENEY – Sister of the Testator. No record of her birth or baptism has been found to date. However, she married James Cheney on 10 February 1658/9, in Shipley parish church. She was buried in Shipley on 19 November 1699

RICHARD JUPP – Brother of the Testator. Little is known about Richard. He was presumably born after 1624, as he does not appear on the Protestation Oath List for West Chiltington. Was he the Richard Jupp who married Mary Mersh in 1661/2? No record of the marriage has been found, but a licence was issued for the marriage on 1 March 1661/2. Richard was then described as being of Steyning, and Mary was from West Chiltington. She was buried in Steyning in March 1670. Richard then remarried on 17 February 1670/1, to Elizabeth Curtis, a widow, in Goring. It is not known when Richard died, but he was still alive in 1688, when his brother Edward remembered him in his Will.

WILLIAM JENDEN. William Jenden was the Rector of West Chiltington from 1675 – 1704/5.
