In The Name of God Amen The Fifteenth day of Aprill in the One and Twentieth yeare of the Rayne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles the Second by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King defender of the Faith And in the yeare of our Lord One Thousand Six Hundred and Seaventy I John Marchant of the Parish of Beeding als Seale in the County of Sussex gent being aged and infirme of body but of a good and perfect mind and memory Thanks be given to God therefore Doe make my last will and Testament in manner and forme following First I give and bequeath my Soule to God that gave it me hopeing through the meritt of my blessed Saviour Jesus Christ to obtaine the Pardon of my Sinnes And my body to be decently buried att the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named Item I give and bequeath unto Edward Payne Mary Osborne widdow Mary Piper widdow Mary Pocock widdow and Mary Borne Spinster (being poore people of the Parish of Beeding aforesaid) Forty shillings apeece And also To widdow Refford (another of the poore of the said Parish) Twenty shillings Item I give and bequeath unto the Poore People of Stenning Three pounds to be paid and dispossed of att the discretion of my said Executor within six moneths next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto the poore people of Bramber in the said County of Sussex Three pounds To be paid and dispossed of att the discretion of my said Executor Item I give more to the said Towne of Stenning Three Pounds Towards P___ing of the Churchstreete between the Shopp of (blank) Peckham Blacksmith And the house of Richard White gent To be paid by my Executor to Dr Chatfield To be disposed of as aforesaid Item I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth the wife of John Wood of New Shoreham in the said County of Sussex Forty pounds of lawfull money of England Item I give to her sonne Thomas Wood Thirty pounds of like money Item I give to her Three daughters Margarett Elizabeth and Sarah Tenn pounds apeece of like money Item I give to Thomas the sonne of the said Thomas Wood Five pounds of like lawfull money All of which said Legacies of Forty pounds Thirty pounds Tenn pounds and Five pounds I will shal be paid by my Executor within Six moneths next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my Kinswoman Elizabeth Streater Forty shillings of like lawfull money of England And to her sonne Thomas Streater Fifty pounds of like money Item I give and bequeath unto my Kinsmen John Owden of Arundell Thirty pounds And to Henry Owden of Lewes Twenty pounds of like lawfull money Item I give to my Kinsman Robert Monk of London Taylor Twenty pounds Item I give to John Marchant of Keymer Tenn pounds And to John Chatfeld of Cowfold in the said County of Sussex Five pounds all which said Legacies I will to be paid within Six moneths next after my decease Item To my Godsonne John Smith of London Five pounds of like lawfull money of England And to my Goddaughter Dorothy ______ of Buttolps in Sussex aforesaid Five pounds of like money Item I give to my Godsonnes John Lidgitter of Stenning Butcher and William Crouch of Bramber aforesaid Three pounds apeece of like money All to be paid within Six moneths next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my Loveing Friends Mary the wife of Richard Blaker of Portslade gent Twenty pounds And to Jane Backshell sister of my Executor Twenty pounds apeece of like lawfull money of England to be paid as aforesaid Item I give to my Kinswoman Elizabeth Hallett And to John Kemp Five pounds apeece Item To my Cousens John Freere of Beeding and Thomas Rapley of Arundell Twenty pounds apeece To be paid as aforesaid Item I give and bequeath unto John Woodgate (The sonne of John Woodgate of Horsham in the County of Sussex gent) Tenn pounds And to Anne and Dorothy his two sisters Five pounds apeece To be severally paid unto them att their respective age of Fourteen yeares Item I give to Mary the wife of Richard Chatfield of Hurst Perpoint in the said County Five pounds Item to Thomas and Richard Lashmer the sonnes of Richard Lashmer of Hurst aforesaid Five pounds apeece All which Legacies I will shal be paid by my said Executor within six moneths next after my decease Item I give unto my Kinswoman Elizabeth Burt of Hurst aforesaid widdow Twenty shillings by the yeare during her naturall life To be paid by my Executor Quarterly (That is to say) Att the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Th’annuncaton of the blessed Virgin Mary St John Baptist and St Michaell Th’archangell The First Payment to begin Att that Feast of the Feasts aforesaid which shall First happen after my decease Item I give and bequeath to Edward Burt Sonn of the said Elizabeth Burt Tenn pounds And to his Two sisters Mary and Elizabeth Forty shillings apeece To be paid within Six moneths next after my decease Item I give to (blank) Merchant widdow Relict of John Merchant late of Newtimber in the said County of Sussex Three pounds and to Elizabeth the wife of Richard Elvey of Beeding aforesaid Three pounds to be paid within Six moneths as aforesaid Item I give and bequeath unto my loveing Friends and Kinsmen Richard Merchant of Ditchling in the said County of Sussex To John Merchant of Hurst aforesaid To Thomas Merchant of Albourne in the said County And to William Merchant of Abberton in the said County and to every of them Forty shillings To buy Rings to weare in Remembrance of me Item I give to John Davy and John Putock my servants Twenty shillings apeece And James Davy another of my servants Tenn shillings and to WilliamWares another servant Two shillings and six pence And to my Maidservant Anne Bud Five pounds To be paid to every of them within One moneth next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto John Pellett my Godsonne Twenty pounds To be paid within Six moneths next after my decease Item I give to my Kinsman Walter Backshell of Beeding Carpenter Twenty pounds To be alsoe paid within Six moneths next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto William Nightingale of St Johns Common in the County aforesaid Eight pounds And to his sister Anne Eight pounds And to his sister Dorothy Eight pounds of Lawfull money of England To be paid within Six moneths after my decease And whereas I the said John Merchant now _____ or some other person or persons to my _____is lawfully and rightfully seized and possessed of and in certaine lands and Tenements called the Broadlands situate lying and being in Stenning aforesaid I doe therefore ( for the better inabling of my Executor to pay and satisfy my debts and Legacies To my Kindred aforesaid) hereby give will and devise All and singular my said Lands and Tenements in Stenning aforesaid called the Broadlands or by whatsoever other name or names the same is Called or Knowne And all my Right To the Interest Estate use or uses Lease or Leases whatsoever Of in and to the said Lands and Premises To my loveing _______ John Backshell the younger gent To have and to hold the said lands and premisses To the said John Backshell ( now liveing att Beeding aforesaid) his heires and assigns forever Which said John Backshell I hereby make nominate and appoint sole Executor of this my last will and Testament giveing him to see this my will faithfully performed And whereas I the said John Marchant have lately Surrendered into the hands of the Land of the Mannor of Beeding aforesaid (By the attendance of John Lucas and Richard Borne Two customary Tennants of the said Mannor All that one Messuage or Tenement and Foure Yards of Land called Aylands Yard Maynard Yard Mai___ Yard and Biggs Yard with ______ _____ in Beeding aforesaid and for such use and uses as I the said John Marchant by my last will and Testament should direct name and appoint now I doe therefore hereby declare That my will and meaning is That the said Surrender of the said Messuage or Tenement and Yards of land with th’appurtence shalbe and ___ To and fore the use and behoofe of the said John Backshell (my Executor) his heires and assigns forever Upon Condicon nevertheless that the said John Backshell his heires executors administrators or assigns shall and will performe this my last will and Testament in manner and forme aforesaid In Witnes whereof I the said John Marchant have sett my hand unto every sheete of this my last will and Testament being Tenn in number And to a Labell affixing all the said sheets together have put my seale And have published and declared the same to be my last will and Testament the day and yeare First above written John Merchant Signed sealed published and declared to be the last will and Testament of the above named John Marchant in the presence of us Mal: Conant Samuel Rogers John Lucas his marke.
