Will of John Batman of Funtington

In the name of God Amen

The one and twenty Day of ffebruary 1653 I John Batman of East Ashling in the parishe of ffuntington in the County of Sussex Blacksmith being sicke in Body but of perfect Mind and Memory Thanks be to Allmighty God therefore Doe make constitute and ordeine this my last will and testament in manner and forme as followeth

ffirst I give and bequeath my Soule into the hands of Almighty God my maker and Creatour and to Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeemer through whose most pretious Deathe and bloodshedding I trust to be saved

And my body to be buried in the Church Yard of ffuntington And all former wills made by mee before I doe utterly revoke as though they had never beene made

Inprimis I give and bequeath to John Batman my sonne five shillings to be paied to him within six Monthes next after my decease

Item I give and bequeath to Ellinor Trulove the wife of Edward Trulove my Daughter five shillings to be payed to her within one Monthe next after my decease

Item I give and bequeath to Joane Osborne the wife of William Osborne my Daughter five shillings to be payed to her within one monthe next after my decease

Item I give and bequeath to Mary Battman my Daughter tenn pounds of good and lawfull money of England to be payed to her when shee shalbe of full Age of one and twenty yeares Item I give and bequeath to Katherine Batman my Daughter tenne pounds of good and lawfull money of England to be paied to her when shee shalbe of full Age of one and twenty yeares

And my will and meaning is that if the said Mary Battman or Katherine Battman doe dye before they shalbe of full Age of one & twenty yeares the whole sume of twenty pounds shall remaine to the longer liver of them to Mary and Katherine

All the Residue of my goods Cattles and Chattles moveable and immoveable my debts and Legacies paied and funerall expenses discharged I give and bequeath to Jone Batman my loving wife whome I make my whole and Sole Executrix of this my last will and Testament And my will and meaning is that John Batman my sonne shall have my house Barne Garden and Shopp after the Death of his mother during the Lease And if the said John Batman my sonne dye and have no Children then the Lease of the house barne and shop aforesaid shall remaine to Mary Battman and Katherine Battman my twoe youngest Daughters or to the longest liver of them.

This will was proved at Westminster the fifth Day of July in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred fifty foure before the Judges for probate of Wills and granting Administracons lawfully authorized by the Oathe of Joane Batman the Relict of the sayd deceased and Sole Executrix named in his said Will to whome the Administracon was Comitted of all and singuler the Goods Chattles and Debts of the said deceased Shee being first sworne by Commission well and truly to administer the same.
