With reference to the announcement of the undermentioned awards, which appeared in the London Gazette of the 18th February, 1919, the following are the acts of gallantry for which the awards were made: — AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL. 315488 Cpl. G. Aris, 16th. Bn. , R. Suss. R. (Eastbourne). For most conspicuous gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty at Quennemont Farm on 2nd September, 1918. In a hand-to-hand encounter this non-commissioned officer accounted for ten of the enemy with the bayonet. He also through heavy rifle and machine-gun fire brought information back from the attacking line during the day. Though temporarily blinded in one eye he went forward again with messages for the front line, which by this time was practically surrounded.
