Will of George Langridge of East Grinstead

This is the last Will and Testament of me George Langridge of East Grinstead in the County of Sussex farmer made this Eighteenth day of June One thousand seven hundred and ninety five as follows [that is to say] first I will order and direct that all my just debts funeral expenses and probate of this my last will and testament be fully paid and satisfied by my executor hereinafter named Item I give and bequeath unto my son Edward the sum of Ten pounds to be paid him as soon as conveniently may be after my decease by my executors hereinafter named as a gratuity in lieu of wages he having lived with me and done the business of a servant for several years past without receiving any wages for the same except pocket money and clothes as to all the rest residue and remainder of my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever which I may die seized and possessed of I give devise and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my good friends William Obbard of Horsted Keynes in the County aforesaid farmer and Robert Gilbert of East Grinstead aforesaid farmer To Hold to them their heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever. In trust nevertheless to make sale of all my said real and personal estate as soon as conveniently may be after my decease for the most money that can be really and truly gotten for the same and to pay and apply the money arising by sale of all my said real and personal estate unto and equally between all my sons namely William George Thomas John Edward and Henry share and share alike as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and which I do hereby give and bequeath to my said sons accordingly and it is my will and meaning and I do hereby order and direct that the receipt of the said William Obbard and Robert Gilbert for the consideration money for which my real estates shall or may be sold shall be a full discharge to the purchaser or purchasers of my said real estates respectively and which purchaser or purchasers shall not be answerable or accountable for the misapplication or nonapplication of such purchase money (the mark X of George Langridge) and it is my will and meaning and I do hereby further direct that the two several sums of Two hundred and fifty pounds which I have lent to my sons William and George respectively and the sum of Thirty pounds which I have also lent to my son John shall be considered and taken as part of their respective shares of my said estate hereby respectively bequeathed to them And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said William Obbard and Robert Gilbert joint Executors and Trustees of this my last Will and testament And it is my Will and meaning and I do hereby further direct and order that my said executors and trustees shall and lawfully may pay satisfy and reimburse to themselves out of my estate all such reasonable costs charges and expenses as they shall respectively pay lay out or expend on and about the execution of the Trusts hereby in them reposed and also all reasonable charges for their time and trouble in the execution of such trusts And that they shall not be answerable or accountable for any more monies than shall actually come to their hands by virtue of this my will nor for the acts receipts or defaults of each other but each of them for his own particular acts receipts and defaults nor shall they or either of them be answerable for or chargeable with any loss that shall or may happen in or to the said trusts estate so as such loss doth not happen through their own respective wilful neglect or default and lastly I do hereby revoke and make void all former and other wills by me at any time or times heretofore made and do declare this to be and contain my last will and testament contained in two sheets of paper set my hand and seal to the stop of the first sheet where the same are affixed together and my hand at the bottom thereof and my hand and seal to this last sheet the day and year first within written The mark X and seal of George Langridge [LS] Signed sealed published and declared by the said Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other John Collins – Mary Jane Collins – M J Barrow

The Will of George Langridge late of East Grinstead within the Archdeaconry of Lewes farmer deceased was proved the Twenty fourth day of November in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and ninety seven before the reverend Edward Robert Raynes Clerk Surrogate and so forth upon the Oaths of William Obbard and Robert Gilbert the joint executors in the said Will named to whom was committed the Administration of the goods & they being first sworn well and faithfully to administer the same and so forth (sworn also that the goods chattels and credits & do not amount in value unto six hundred pounds)
