War Office, 3rd September, 1919. With reference to the announcement of the undermentioned awards which appeared in the London Gazette of the 1st January, 1919, the following are the acts of gallantry for which the awards were made : DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL. G/3590 Sjt. A. J. Newnham, 9th Bn. , R. Suss. R. (Dane Hill, Sussex). For conspicuous gallantry on 21st March, 1918, when in charge of regimental transport. He went up five times in the day to brigade headquarters at Hesbecourt through heavy gas and H. E. bombardments. There were many casualties on the road and many vehicles were prevented from getting up but by his gallant and skilful example he succeeded in getting his transport up on every occasion. During the subsequent retreat his handling of the transport was infallible.
