Will of Elizabeth Wheatley of Climping

In the Name of God, Amen

Of Elizabeth Wheatley of the Parish of Climping in the County of Sussex, widow, do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following, that is to say:

I desire to be buried in a plain and decent manner and that all my debts, funeral, testamentary and other incidental expenses be paid by my Executor.

I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Wire such one of my three rings as she shall choose, a pair of silver sugar tongs and the sum of fifty Pounds of lawful money of Great Britain.

I give and bequeath unto my daughter Susanna Trott such one of my two remaining rings as she shall choose, my tea chest and the sum of fifty Pounds of like money to be paid her by my Executor Mr. John Boniface into her own sole hands and her receipt alone shall be a proper discharge, after the rate of ten Pounds by the year till the whole is paid.

I give and bequeath unto my great-granddaughter , the eldest daughter of Mary Baker, my remaining ring.

I give unto my granddaughter Charlotte Rainer my clock and to my granddaughter Ruth Lambert my chest of drawers and chair.

I give and bequeath unto my grandsons and granddaughters Charles Hammond, George Hammond, William Hammond, Ruth Lambert and the said Charlotte Rainer ten pounds each.

I give and forgive my son-in-law William Hammond the sum of ten Pounds and eight Shillings which he owes me on a Note of Hand and all interest due for the same.

I give and bequeath unto my said daughters Elizabeth Wire and Susanna Trott all my clothes and wearing apparel to be equally divided between them by my niece Miss Sarah Burnard.

I give and bequeath unto my said grandsons and granddaughters the said Charlotte Rainer, Ruth Lambert, Charles Hammond, George Hammond and William Hammond one third part of all the residue and remainder of my monies, effects and personal estate, and unto my said daughters Elizabeth Wire and Susanna Trott the other two remaining third parts of my said monies, effects and personal estate.

And my mind and will is that if my said daughter Elizabeth Wire shall die in my life time all and whatsoever I have hereinbefore given to her or for her benefit, shall go and be divided amongst her children equally, share and share alike.

And also that if my daughter Susanna Trott shall happen to die in my life time, all and whatsoever I have hereinbefore given to her or for her benefit shall go and be divided amongst her children equally, share and share alike.

I make and appoint Mr. John Boniface the Younger of Ford, in the said County of Sussex, Executor of this my Will, hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten.

Signed, sealed and published and declared by the Testatrix Elizabeth Wheatley as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us, William Barnard – Joseph Fowler.

This Will was PROVED before the Rev. James Baden Carpenter, Clerk, Surrogate, on the 4th day of November in the year of our Lord 1818 on the oath of John Boniface, the Executor named therein to whom a day was given for exhibiting an inventory.
